as a RHPS veteran of 12+ years, I know what an undeserved bad rap RHPS has gotten. And hopefully this video will help explain the phenomenon. It's fabulously done, true to the attitudes of the participants, and true to the spirit of RHPS internationally. (In other words, it's not at ALL like "Trekkies".) Deffinately a wonderful addition to your RHPS collection! I recommend it highly!

Acting Shakespeare (1982) Review

Acting Shakespeare (1982)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I saw this video in my high school British Lit. class in 1986 and was mesmerized. I was not a particular fan of Shakespeare at the time, was in fact one of those kids who found Shakespeare mostly boring and irrelevant, but this turned me on to all that Shakespeare can be and why he has remained popular for so long. I have been a huge fan of Ian McKellan ever since; he is superb in this. I have been looking for this video for years, checking McKellan's website, ebay and everywhere I could think of, so I was so excited when I googled the title today, and found it on Amazon! I cannot recommend McKellan's _Acting Shakespeare_ highly enough. It remains, in my memory, the best theatre -- Shakespeare or otherwise -- that I have ever seen. It is just Ian McKellan on a bare stage, no props or costumes as far as I remember, performing monologues from several Shakespearian plays and commenting on the plays and characters and how he approaches them. The simplicity is perhaps part of what makes this so beautifully done.As it hasn't been released yet, I cannot comment on the technical quality of the sound or video. My hope is that the reason they took so long to release it is because they were picky about getting the audio and video quality right. Anyway, it is superb.

A masterful tour de force from "one of the most distinguished performers of his generation" (The New York Times).
Alone on stage, without props or costumes, Ian McKellen performs some of Shakespeare's most striking monologues and offers his own personal anecdotes about life in the theater. From Henry VI to Macbeth, McKellen demonstrates the incredible universality of Shakespeare's plays with wit and humor – skillfully revealing the actor behind the writer in this celebrated one-man show.
Produced by Andrew Susskind and presented at the CBS Broadcast Center in New York City.
Also includes an 8-page booklet with reflections by Ian McKellen.

North America's National Parks (As Seen In IMAX Theaters) Review

North America's National Parks (As Seen In IMAX Theaters)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
(Please note that English is not my native language.)
Good:
Obviously, it's about national parks, and contains really impressive footage, well chosen and thought-out shots.
Most footage is high-definition. Time-lapse effect (everything is sped-up) is nicely used to improve dynamics or point out changes occuring in nature.
Bad:
There are absolutely no sounds from nature - entire presentation is drowned in background music (of acceptable quality, though) and narration.
There are no animals and insects visible (except some unrecognizable, small dark birds in background), which somehow makes the whole film look empty and unnatural. I get that not everyone likes spiders or snakes, including myself... but weren't there any ladybugs or butterflies? Wild cats? Squirrels? What about endangered species like wolves? In all the national parks of all the north America, there is not a single animal worth mentioning and filming?
Narration is less than impressive consisting mostly of empty phrases like "timeless beauty inspires spirit to be spiritually spiritual". Nothing is said about geology, botanics, climate, why do these factors combine at these places in such ways to make them so attractive and colorful. It is said, though, that "Death Valley is a desert and has a desert climate... Mount Rainier is a mountain and has a mountain climate... rain forest gets lots of rain".
There is a mysterious fade to black transition every few minutes for no particular reason (except to insert commercials, I suppose, if this material is sold to someone interested adding them).
Ugly:
Some scenes are shot with standard-definition camera, the difference is really noticable, for the worse. Some scenes are shot with unknown-definition camera which is badly out of focus.
Some high-definition shots are made with camera with dirty lenses and the dirt is there through several shots. Not the little drops or water or something that can be accepted as "part of nature"... just some irregular dirt, fingerprints or something...
Some shots are made with 24 fps and poorly, causing bad stuttering, "upscaled" to 30 fps.
Something strange happened in editing process, so at the left side there is about 1 inch of empty black space. The width of black bar is not constant throughout the film.
Some scenes have weird pink stripe at bottom, looking as malfunctioning camera.

I originally found it in a Seattle library, but found a copy online and purchased it and gave it to a Professor in Childhood Development because she had requested individuals make videos of children who were related in someway to students in a University class, to answer specific questions that might relate to Piaget type developmental stages. However, I just received for myself a brand new copy for my own edification! It emphasizes some basic qualties one must implement to make reasonable quality DVD videos.

Faerie Tale Theatre - Jack and the Beanstalk (1983) Review

Faerie Tale Theatre - Jack and the Beanstalk (1983)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Many years ago, the actress Shelley Duvall created and co-produced a series for Showtime Television called Faerie Tale Theatre. The quality of most of these stories are first-rate and feature many stars of the 1970's and '80's, quite a few of whom are still working today.
This is one of the worst movies in Faerie Tale Theatre's largely ingenious stable of titles. The impressive list of stars in this, including Elliott Gould, Jean Stapleton and Katherine Helmond are wasted on a meandering, silly script that falls far short of the creativity it was attempting.
Elliott Gould's Giant is written as extremely dumb, hearkening to the caveman stereotype and immediately short-circuiting any potential suspense in the rivalry between he and Jack. Mr. Gould is such a fine actor that I wish Faerie Tale Theatre had utilized the inventiveness evident in so many of their other productions, and made the Giant smart. This would make him a worthier adversary for Jack, and increase audience enjoyment of the story.
Jean Stapleton is similarly hampered by a script which eliminates the actress's intelligence and simply makes her Giantess a kinder version of her brutish husband. Utilize as many of the gifts that the actors possess. Trust them and the original tale rather than let misguided alterations ruin a fine story.
Katherine Helmond is extremely good in this as Jack's Mother. So good, in fact, that a decision could have been made to mute a forgettable Dennis Christopher, and make her the center of the story. That may seem like a stretch, but I guarantee you that the overall results would have been better.
Overall, though, she cannot save a rare misfire in the vaunted Faerie Tale Theatre series. I do recommend seeing this, as part of the series. However, do not start with this, as it will ruin your mood for what is really a classic series.

Timeless... A National Parks Odyssey (IMAX) (2004)
Average Reviews:

I agree with other reviewers that the images and music are gorgeous. The landscapes are breathtakingly beautiful. Yet I want other buyers to realize what I didn't: many of the scenes are filmed with time-lapse photography. In other words, the clouds and shadows move across the landscape in accelerated motion. Some viewers will like this pace and won't mind that the naturally inspiring landscape has been altered. But for me, this created a sense of hurry and hectic rushing through time instead of the simplicity and calm of a real-time cinescape. Some of the chapters are presented at normal speed. These are the ones I find most enjoyable, and I only wish the talents who created this had let the natural beauty and their skills stand alone. Many will enjoy this film as it is. I had expected a simpler version of nature.

Masterpiece Theater: Oliver Twist (2000) Review

Masterpiece Theater: Oliver Twist (2000)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The poor reviews this movie has received (in both the DVD and VHS formats) I feel are totally unwarranted. This is my favorite put-to-film Dickens novel (except for the various "A Christmas Carol's" out there), and I am ecstatic that this version is finally available on DVD.
Now, in this adaption, I believe the prequel works very well. I think it makes this a much more comprehensive movie and gives the characters involved (especially Monks) much more depth. And, because of the length of this version that I am reviewing, it allows the viewer to get to know each character much deeper than the other filmed versions available. We get to know Oliver's parents and Aunt Rose up close, although it is done through liberties taken by the producer and not necessarily Dickens himself. I do feel, however, the great novelist would not particularly mind in this case.
The acting is as good, if not better, than pretty much most period epics I have seen. The actors play off of each other well - they match their roles perfectly. The costumes and sets are excellent. They have captured the early Victorian period so well - both the good and the bad - it's almost as if the viewer is peering through a looking glass into the past.
As for the story following Dickens' original novel...well, I have yet to see any movie follow a novel to a "T." It just doesn't happen, unfortunately, with virtually any put-to-film novel. But this follows the original, as a whole, much much closer than the other versions I have seen - definitely more than "Oliver," and infinitely more than the Disney version with Richard Dreyfuss, which was made into a totally different story than what Dickens had intended.
Don't let the nearly 6 hour length scare you off - there is no time during this whole version where one is bored (unless they are a child - definitely not a children's movie!). Being a fan of epic period movies, I found this to be as enticing as any other epic novels put to the screen.
Bravo to all involved!

That's Singing: Best of Broadway Review

That's Singing: Best of Broadway

This taping absolutely blew me away! I originally bought it for the single purpose of seeing Barry Bostwick perform "Summer Loving" (instead of the talentless Travolta) after hearing the recording of the orginal "Grease!" cast. What an incredible find. As someone who is in love with musical theatre-I consider this film a treasure! To see such talented performers reviving the roles that they created is a once in a life time oportunity caught here for generations to fall in love with. You are treated to Broadway's Grand Dame Ethel Merman singing 2 of her timeless classics, Nell Carter bringing character and energy to Cole Porter music, Barry Bostwick and Carol Demas proving once and for all who the real Danny and Sandy were, Stephen Nathan and David Haskell tackling probably one of the most challenging duets ever-from "Godspell", the enigmatic Chita Rivera dancing to "The Shriners' Ballet" as well as singing and hoofing to "Little One New York",multi-talented Jerry Orback singing "Try to Remember" and the show-stopping "Lullaby of Broadway", and Ray Walston, gleefully reminising "The Good Ol' Days". Any self-respecting Broadway and/or musical theatre fan should own this taping. It gives the audience a glipmse back to a time when it took pure talent to make in on the Great White Way!!

Wendy Wassertein's Kiss, Kiss, Dahlings / Terrence McNally's The Last Mile (1992) Review

Wendy Wassertein's Kiss, Kiss, Dahlings / Terrence McNally's The Last Mile (1992)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This show was broadcast in 1992 for the 20th anniversary of "Great Performances."
Hard to believe, but the DVD contains two plays, each only about 15 minutes long. With this much brevity, it won't surprise you to hear that neither play outstays its welcome.
The first, "Kiss, Kiss, Dahlings," is divided into three short acts. The three actresses (Blythe Danner, Cynthia Nixon and Nancy Marchand) play three generations of stage actresses in three different time periods. This is a love letter to the theater from the late Wendy Wasserstein, and light fare.
The second is about a nervous opera soprano about to make her debut at the Met in "Tosca." Written by Terrence McNally, this is the better piece. It stars the incandescent Bernadette Peters, who is astonishingly vulnerable at times.
Opera fans will get a couple of big laughs from the inside jokes McNally weaves in, but even non-opera folks can enjoy it. A relatively restrained Nathan Lane, a relatively unrestrained Paul Sorvino and a very funny Bill Irwin also register in their roles.
All that said, I'm not sure it's worth buying the DVD for only 30 minutes of drama. Perhaps rent it first and then determine if it's something you'll want to view again and again.

High School Musical 3: Senior Year (Deluxe Extended Edition + Digital Copy + DVD and BD Live) (2008) Review

High School Musical 3: Senior Year (Deluxe Extended Edition + Digital Copy + DVD and BD Live) (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The movie is truly amazing! (And it`s an extended edition!) Anyone who liked the first two will literally fall in love with this one! I think that even if you didn't see the first two, you will like this one because of what it talks about. This movie is about something we all go through: saying good-bye to our friends after high school. Addiotionally, it's nice to see ateen movie that doesn't revolve around sex, drugs, violence, and profanity.
The East High Wildcats decide to put on their final show together at their school: a musical about their twelfth grade experience. It'll be a pretty unique musical because, for once, they won't have to play a character - they'll be playing themselves! But due to her incredible intelligence, Gabriella, the female protagonist, is offered to skip her senior year in high school and go to straight onto college right away. Will she accept Standard's offer, leaving her friends, boyfriend, and the musical behind? Will Troy, the male protagonist, chose to continue with basketball or will he chose a career than involves acting? Will Sharpay win a scholarship to New York's Julliard University of Performing Arts or will her brother? Will Ryan and Kelsi find true love? Find out in this exciting conclusion to one of the world's greatest film series! The only good thing recently produced by the screwed-up Disney Channel! Yes I hate Disney Channel, Hannah Montana, Cory in the House, Jonas Brothers, and all of the other inappropriate teen shows they've decided to put on a children's channel. But High School Musical is different. It teaches both kids and teens a valuable lesson and it allows adults to revisit their past. The plot is actually relevant to what many people feel and...it's a teenage musical! You don't see something like that everyday! Just watching Troy and Gabriella perform a beautiful waltz is reason enough to buy this film. Also, the old fashioned music at the end proves that rap, hip hop, and pop isn't always what you'll see in a teenage film.
The songs are as original, catchy, and wonderful as they are visually stunning! During "Scream," the turning walls that represent Troy's confusion are spectacular! The disappearing pictures on the wall in Gabriella's solo "Walk Away" were really quite sad. The Statue of Liberty that shoots fireworks out of its head in "I Want It All" is amazing. The sets in "A Night To Remember" will leave you with your mouth wide open. "Right Here Right Now," "Can I Have This Dance," and "Just Wanna Be With You" are three incredible romance songs. And, of course, Troy and Chad turning into little boys in "The Boys Are Back" was really cute. That reminds, "Right Here Right Now" and "The Boys Are Back" are so of my favorites because of what they talk about: not wanting to grow up. Anyway, n case you forgot or are too lazy to read the customer reviews for the HSM3 soundtrack, here are the songs:
1. "Now Or Never" - Troy and the Wildcats basketball team
2. "Right Here, Right Now" - Troy and Gabriella
3. "I Want It All" - Sharpay and Ryan [A TRUE BROADWAY SONG!]
4. "Can I Have This Dance? (Version I)" - Troy and Gabriella
5. "A Night To Remember" - cast!
6. "Just Wanna Be With You" - Ryan & Kelsi, Troy & Gabriella
7. "The Boys Are Back" - Troy and Chad
8. "Walk Away" - Gasbriella
9. "Scream" - Troy
10. "Can I Have This Dance? (Version II)" - Troy and Gabriella
11. "Senior Year Spring Musical" ***made up of reprises of NOW OR NEVER (Chad, the Wildcats basket team, cheerleaders), I WANT IT ALL (Ryan), JUST WANNA BE WITH YOU (Sharpay & Jimmy, and later Troy and Gabriella), and A Night To Remember (Sharpay vs. Tiara), as well as a new song: Last Chance (Ryan and Kelsi)***
12. "We're All In This Together" - cast!
13. "High School Musical" - cast!
14. "Just Getting Started" - during the end credits, winner of the Get In The Picture ABC7 contest
By the way, during the "I Want It All," you actually see Gabriella The Maid a bit more than you did in the theaters because you see that part of the song in a different camera angle than you did in theaters. That also lets you see an important-looking lady giving Ryan a newspaper with him and Sharpay on the cover. This is not due to the extended edition thing because the song is the same length, but, like I said, the camera angle is different so you see more things.
The special features on this Blu-ray are freakin' cool! Even though it's a single disc release, it has the exact same content found on the Two-Disc release, plus more! These are the Special Features (the last two aren't found on the two-disc release).
-- Extended Version Of The Movie
-- Optional Sing Along Version
-- Bloopers
-- Deleted Scenes
-- "Cast Goodbyes" feature
-- "Night Of Nights" feature
-- "It's All In The Dress" feature
-- "Senior Awards" feature
-- New Cast Profiles
In addition, just like in the Two-Disc release, you can download a digital copy of the movie. And as if that weren't enough, it comes with the first disc of the Two-Disc Edition!!!!! Now you can watch the movie practically anywhere because you have the regular version as well as the Blu-ray version!!!! What do you know, it is a two disc after all. ^_^

This dvd is awesome! It's funny, entertaining and real. I liked how relateable and real the characters seemed and the overall presentation of the play. William Shakespeare - Love's Labour's Lost (2024) Review

William Shakespeare - Love's Labour's Lost (2024)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Opus Arte's presentation of Dominic Dromgoole's production of William Shakespeare's "Love's Labour's Lost" is highly entertaining, and for me, highly recommended.
Firstly, the technical aspects of the disc are very good. The production takes place in a reproduction of Shakespeare's "The Glode" theater in which the stage was surrounded by the audience. The disc's sound felt very immersive, placing you in that audience. The video was sharp and clear.
Next, the camera work was excellent, adding a necessary shift of attention from actor to actor, neither just holding one frame too long, nor switching, Michael Bay-like, and intruding on the presentation.
Finally, the production itself is delightful, mixing Shakespeare's most intellectual play with the overtones of a Mack Sennet pie fight. The problems of the "unfunny clowns" is here solved.
If you have enjoyed videos of Shakespeare's plays that have "updated" the settings (I'm looking at you, "Romeo+Juliet"), try viewing this production.

Martial Arts Theater #3: The Hot, The Cool and the Vicious/He Has Nothing but Kung Fu Review

Martial Arts Theater #3: The Hot, The Cool and the Vicious/He Has Nothing but Kung Fu
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Two fine, old-school king fu films. Note, however, only "He has Nothing but Kung Fu" stars Gordon Liu. What ploys distributers won't try to sell their items! (Also see my review of "Raiders of Buddhist Kung Fu.") "The Hot, the Cool and the Vicious" stars the great leg fighter, Tao-liang (Delon) Tan.
The former is about the son of a magistrate (Liu) who suffers from amnesia, and gets tangled up in the antics of a con-man (the guy who co-starred with Liu in "Dirty Ho"--a wonderful film!) and the injustices of a local crime ring. In the processs the amnesiatic and martial arts proficient Liu unwittingly becomes a Robin Hood-like character. As always, Gordon Liu delivers. This film lacks the "feel" of Liu's later Shaw Brothers productions, but it is still very worthwhile. ****
The latter is about an honest, upright "sheriff" (Tan) of a Chinese town, a mysterious, transient ex-convict, a brothel keeper, a local crime boss and his counterfeiting ring. This film has a great American Western flair to it, and is my favorite Delon Tan film; even his English-dubbed voice is very suitable to him. Great fights, winsome characters, heroics, subplots and funny--but apt--dubbing mark this classic. The blond-haired villian sounds like he's talking through a tin can, but strangely it all seems to fit well in this film. I actually like this film more than "He has Nothing but Kung Fu." *****
(**** + *****)/2 = 4.5 stars.
Top shelf for sure!

La Gran Scena Opera Presents Vera: Life of a Diva (2009) Review

La Gran Scena Opera Presents Vera: Life of a Diva (2009)
Average Reviews:

I, too, came to buy this wonderful disk via the review in Opera News. While the reviewer does say its length might be too much of a good thing, the operative phrase is "good thing". If you love opera, in spite of its sometimes wretched excesses, then you will be totally charmed by this send-up of all its gloriously wretched conventions, lovingly spoofed, beautifully (mostly) sung.
I wish I'd been in that audience, an audience which obviously understood the layers upon layers of meaning -- listen for the undercurrent during Kavatina Turner's "battles" to get every little thing just the way she wanted it, listen for Sylvia Bills's lament about the few notes she had at the end of her career...oh, what the heck, just listen, because you'll have a hard time catching it all the first time through. And you will watch and listen over and over, I guarantee it!

NEVER APOLOGIZE is a 2007 documentary of Malcolm McDowell's one man show/tribute to director Lindsey Anderson. McDowell has a sharp wit and is a wonderful storyteller. Sadly, this event is filmed on video and presented full-frame. It's not nearly as fun as O LUCKY MALCOLM (the feature length McDowell career retrospective included on O LUCKY MAN DVD and CLOCKWORK ORANGE ANNIVERSARY/STANLEY KUBRICK COLLECTION BRDs). Still, it's a touching tribute to the underrated and (sadly, to US audiences) largely unknown Anderson.

Moby Dick (2006) Review

Moby Dick (2006)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is not a movie version of Herman Melville's MOBY DICK; it is a single actor on a stage, in front of an audience, playing all roles. You might think this wouldn't be enjoyable, but for a mature viewer seeking to squeeze the essence out of the book, this is quite worth while. The actor is brilliant, shifting characters in a blink. One deeply experiences the personalities of the main characters, especially Ahab; you can feel the mad rage pouring forth from Ahab.
