The British 2-act play, written my John Mortimer is a brilliant comedy about an unsuccessful aging barrister Mr. Morganhall, whose 40 year career in law has been sitting out waiting to be chosen for a dock brief, and now he is assigned to defend a man who murdered his wife. Mr. Fowle, admittedly guilty, and a meek bird seed shop owner murdered her because she was cheerful, fun and loved joking around with a lodger, but she was too respectable to fool around with the lodger. Meanwhile she ridiculed her husband having bitterness with no humor and lack of fun. She was murdered because she did not leave with the lodger.
Since the play is a legal satire, Morganhall is anxious to impress the judge, receive accolades for the case and he sets out to conjure the perfect defense, for a man who clearly admits guilt. The only two characters provide the clever dialogue and the two rehearse the perfect defense, and role play the judge, jury, witness, etc.
The film based on the play includes an alternative title "Trial and Error", released in 1962.
What Will We Tell Caroline
Another clever 2 act play by Mortimer is a woman whose friend of 18 years sings and plays guitar to her, flirts mildly with her, and pays her some attention. Her husband, on the other hand, displays his jealousy and contempt for the relationship, but the twist is surprising. With this unique relationship that has continued for years, they ponder what to tell their oddly behaved daughter Caroline.
Mortimer's two plays have unique and clever storytelling based on marital relationships. The two lead roles from Dock Brief and What Will We Tell Caroline are the same lead characters with superb acting by the two.
John Mortimer is familiar and most well known for the British television Rumpole of the Bailey: The Complete Series Megaset. He died in January 2009 at 85 years of age. ......Excellent Plays! Rizzo
