KARAGIOZIS ANCIENT GREEK SHADOW THEATRE Review

KARAGIOZIS ANCIENT GREEK SHADOW THEATRE

This DVD was a great disappointment! It was nothing more than a slide show of random karagiozi images with unrelated music playing in the background. I was under the impression that I was purchasing a series of different Karagiozi skits...not so at all :-( It was definitely not worth the $30.00. It is not even worth $5.

The Masterpiece: A Toymaker's Dream Review

The Masterpiece: A Toymaker's Dream

I first saw this performed live at Victory Christian Center in Tulsa; where it originated. I then saw it every year following on Easter Sunday until they stopped performing it (wanting to now focus on other performances.)
I bought the videocassete at one of the shows, and have since worn it out watching it over and over. I have probably seen this play 30+ times. It is a wonderful allegorical story of the fall of the angels, the expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden, and of the Life, death, and Ressurection of Jesus.
Yes, it's a Christian movie. It is also beautiful, and powerful, and haunting. I wept the first time I saw it. I am still moved to tears at times.
Buy this movie. It is worth far more than the $(...) asking price.

Black Belt Theatre, Vol. 14: 8 Diagram Fighter/Magnificent Natural Fist Review

Black Belt Theatre, Vol. 14: 8 Diagram Fighter/Magnificent Natural Fist
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Overall, this was an interesting and entertaining film, with a pretty good plot and fight scenes. It follows the path of the "5th Son" of the Yiang family after his father and the rest of his brothers (except 6th Son), loyal to the emperor, are defeated in battle by Mongol rebels. 5th Son is wounded. He and 6th Son escape from the battle, but in different directions.
5th Son is helped by priests at a Buddhist monastery, where he hides and where his wounds are cared for. 5th Son is allowed to train with the monks, melding his family's unique Yiang Spear style with Shaolin pole style.
Eventually, the rage of the Mongol rebels disrupts the monastery, drawing 5th Son--who in the course of the story is reunited with his brother and sister--the monks and priests into a final showdown.
What I found bizarre, and what I felt the movie could have done without, making the film better as the result, were these amateurish special effects; for example: people appearing out of thin air, darts of light thrown from the hand, hokey electromagnetic-looking fields surrounding a person's body, and the like, during many of the fight scenes. In addition, the "8 Diagrams" amounted to nothing more than the 8 trigrams of the I-Ching superimposed on the screen during a training sequence, but otherwise having no apparent connection with the plot, script or storyline. (Well, maybe it had to do with the "completeness" of the fighting style that evolved from combining Yiang and Shaolin.) All-in-all, these unnecessary and poorly executed effects gave a decidedly (and annoyingly) 1970's flavor to the film which, frankly, I think the viewer could do without. Also, the final fight scene seemed hurried, and the wire work too fantastic and incongruent with earlier scenes in the film. For these reasons, I deducted 1 star from the rating.
Aside from these chief gripes, I really liked the thoughful character of 5th Son, his interaction with the Buddhist monks and priests, and the ultimate decision he makes at the end of the film (which I won't spoil for you).
The prospective buyer should note that this film, 8 Diagram Fighter, which shares similarities with The Invincible Pole Fighters (starring Gordon Liu) is NOT the same film.
In summary, second shelf entertainment.
As for "Magnificent Natural Fist," in a word: Terrible. The video transfer is extremely poor. The movie seems to be spliced together with no rhyme nor reason. The fight scenes are low-grade and sped up. The make up on the nose of the main character is hideous. In general, a regretable concoction. I have yet to sit through the film in its entirety, and I normally have a cast iron stomach for bad kung-fu films.
From what I have seen so far on the "Black Belt" double feature series, the second film is pure filler, and the pictures on the front cover often have little, if anything, to do with what is on the DVD itself.
1 star.
Average for the two films=(1+3)/2=2

Tough Guys of Kung Fu: Dragon on Fire/Golden Dragon Silver Snake/Killing Machine/Rage of the Review

Tough Guys of Kung Fu: Dragon on Fire/Golden Dragon Silver Snake/Killing Machine/Rage of the
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
OK another Brentwood 10-movie, 5-disc set. You know what to expect: no frills versions of movies, not great quality but it's cheap, right? At least with Tough Guys of Kung Fu, most of these movies are straight from the martial arts ghetto, so you're not really losing anything here in terms of quality. From worst to best (I guess?!?):
(10) Rage of the Dragon. I can find very little to recommend this movie, with the exception of the brightly colored costumes. Oh yeah, when the main guy fights, instead of the usual cheesy dubbed in sound effects, there are very cheesy bleeping electronic effects. Enjoy.
(9) Militant Eagle. The beggar kids that followed the hero around were pretty funny. Other than that, this one was extremely boring until it got to the last couple of scenes. There were some really weird-looking opponents at the end, namely a big ogre-looking dude with a spiked club and a strange hermaphrodite (???) or eunuch person. I liked the last 15 minutes quite a bit, the rest of the movie, eh!
(8) Golden Dragon Silver Snake. Pretty standard Kung Fu Theater type material, the saving grace on this one is the humor. Lots of corny dialogue and the highlights include some egg fighting and some acoustic guitar-fu. Ridiculous.
(7) Fists of Bruce Lee. Bruce Lee had nothing at all to do with this, unless you count the resemblance of the lead actor to Bruce Lee for exploitation purposes. Lots of "borrowed" music: any movie that uses a crappy cover of Average White Band's "Pick Up the Pieces" as the theme song is OK by me. Undercover cop antics means fighting lots of people with weird hair.
(6) Dragon on Fire. More of the expected nuttiness, this time with a white-faced guy in a wheelchair as the main villain. It really gets going at the end when the wheelchair guy starts fighting. Hey the "Crippled Masters" would have killed 'im! HAHAHA!!!!
(5) Ninja Turf. Really bad 1980's Golan/Globus style martial arts nonsense. I would describe the idea as a cross between the 80's Ninja movies and "Tuff Turf." There are no ninjas in it, by the way, but there is one scene with breakdancing. Threadbare plot concerning a security agency that ends up fighting every gang in the L.A. area, apparently. Corny and terrible action scenes, at least there were a lot of them. I liked it because it was the only film in the set that was made in the U.S., so it stood out from the others. And it was bad enough to be really entertaining.
(4) Tattoo Collection. It's actually "Tattoo Connection" according to the movie itself, but I kind of like the misprinted title. It stars Jim Kelly, famous for "Black Belt Jones" and his supporting role in "Enter the Dragon." He brings a 70's blaxploitation sensibility to the table, which results in great lines like, "I've been known to be called the black six million dollar man!" Also, it is my well-researched opinion that "bast**d" is the most commonly used word in kung fu movies. Tattoo Connection uses this word more than any other movie I have seen, someone even calls a girl a bast**d! Check it out.
(3) Deadly Kick. I don't know anything about the people who did this movie, but it sure was entertaining. 2 kung fu experts trained by the same master go up against a syndicate bent on mass destruction. Some real weird scenes at times, especially the guy fighting with the blind girl. Tarantino should plagiarize this scene for his next Kill Bill sequel.
(2) Killing Machine. Hey it's Sonny Chiba, the best actor in martial arts, ever. He would be tough if he never lifted a finger. He lifts many fingers here as a Japanese WW2 vet who fights against Chinese oppression after the war. Bloody as hell. This made me want to get the 10-movie Sonny Chiba pack, AAGGHH the addiction continues.... So why is Sonny Chiba so cool? I think it's those eyebrows. I wish I had tough lookin eyebrows like that.
(1) The Crippled Masters. OK it was a great concept...dude gets his arms chopped off by an evil guy, then the same evil guy burns another guy's legs with acid and beats them until they look like last week's KFC. The twist here is that both actors are actually disfigured and they fight like there was no tomorrow. You have not lived until you see an armless man spinning a spear crazily around his head. This movie was unbelievable and I applaud both fighters who played the Crippled Masters. Brilliant stuff. Contains the great line, "If I am a ghost, would I be eating pig swill?"
So to sum it up, if you don't demand a large budget for your movies, and if you like kung fu, you are a prime candidate for this affordable 10-movie set. If you break down the price, you are paying less than the cost of a movie rental to actually own each movie. Killing Machine and The Crippled Masters alone make the set well worth it.

At the end of 18th century Russian count Nikolai Ryazanov loses his beloved wife. He gives himself over to a cause of organizing a naval expedition to establish a trade link between Russia and California. On arrival he falls in love with Spanish governors daughter.
This play was enourmously popular in Russia running for 2 decades. Primarily a love story it is also a historical allegory commenting on the cold war politics of the era. It is not a typical rock opera as it blends rock with Russian Orthodox chants and period music. It is a unique experience, beautiful, fateful, tragic, colorful and rich.

DVD Spectacular (1998) Review

DVD Spectacular (1998)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a DVD made for professionals that understand what they are doing. It comes with a 10 page booklet, and I mean a tiny tiny tiny booklet that gives very minimal details except for perhaps what tracks are on the disk.
This booklet is so bad that even sound engineers would be bummed out since it does not even provide the most minimal tech info as to vu levels to set, responses etc etc I mean even using a sound level meter I had no clue as to what I was looking for.
Another thing that bothered me, once I started any tracks or test I had to push EVERY button on my remote to get the thing to stop ....
The dvd also contains video tests and if little is said about the audio portion even less is said about the video. pretty colours and dots & squares though...
The ONLY thing this dvd does, and why at least it has 1 star, is allows you to check frequency responce from sub woofer to the highest tweeter and all the speaker channels for a 9 speaker setup ....
Dont waste you money unless you KNOW what you are doing

I have the entire Lucy video collection and love it! I am such a Lucy fan that I nick-named my 2 boisterous granddaughters "Lucy and Ethel" (these 2 girls are forever getting into trouble). Lucy brings on the laughs almost from the very beginning. No one can twirl spaghetti on a fork like her! With John Wayne, she is in rare form. Anyone would be proud to own and share these videos. They definitely don't come close to anyone duplicating her. What a lady!

The Dining Room Review

The Dining Room
Average Reviews:

This Great Performances work from PBS takes place in the dining room of a grand home. The six actor emsemble play multiple roles in a series of vignettes which address the passing of a way of life that is priveledged and traditional.
The play is a poignant interplay between parents, sons and daughters, inlaws and friends and addresses changing social mores all within the context of the dining room. It is a stunning performance and will bring nostalgic memories to anyone who grew up among a tradition of formal dining, strict etiquette, and social directives. The play illustrates the glory and the pettiness that comes from wealth and privelege.
I recommend it highly.

Dead Girl on Film/Kitty Killers Review

Dead Girl on Film/Kitty Killers
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Dead Girl on Film (Brian Paulin, 2001)
Brian Paulin's second feature (available through Sub Rosa films) is so obscure that it doesn't even have its own IMDB page. You probably have to be a rabid Paulin fan to even know this thing exists, but with his last two flicks, Paulin has built himself something of a following, and so the movie is getting more exposure now than it did when it first came out. That's not entirely a bad thing, but if you've read my reviews of Paulin's more recent movies, you know there's a definite progression in the professional look-and-feel and the gore effects as he goes from film to film. Given that this was his second, you can imagine how cheesy it is. Still, if you're a fan of Paulin's, it's well worth your time.
Plot: three guys need some quick cash, so they decide to make S&M porn. Which is easier said than done, I guess, since their distributor, after disappointing sales, cancels their contract. One gets the idea to up the dose and make a snuff movie. Jimmy (Paulin), the guy with the camera, is initially reluctant, but he needs money worse than the others, so he goes along with the plan. But man, do they pick the wrong star...
The thing I've always really liked about Paulin's movies is that his enthusiasm for filmmaking really comes through. Even if the movie's unbearably cheesy (as this one is), you can tell that everyone involved, Paulin most of all, had a lot of fun making it. It gives his movies a kind of charm, even when the painfully bad gore effects are coming at you a mile a minute, as they do in the climax of this movie.
I reiterate that for general horror fans looking for a professional-quality horror flick like you'd get out of the "underground" studios Hollywood is trying to pass off as indies, you will undoubtedly be disappointed by this. If, on the other hand, you're already familiar with Paulin's more recent, and better, movies, and you're interested in seeing more by the director, then this one is worth checking out. **

This video came out when Les Miserables was beginning its phenomenon. Now it's bigger that what was expected. I thought it very interesting to see all the backstage stuff and comments from Cameron Mackintosh and Claude Michel Shonberg and Alain Boublil. The musical has made itself into a life of its own and seeing everything going on afterwards is interesting. The magic is still there though and from the comments of the producers and creators, it's obvious that their whole hearts and souls were put into making this musical. This is great for anybody that enjoys the musical.

This version of the Greek tragedy, Antigone, is inappropriate for sophomore high school students. The actress acts out suggestive movements toward Polyneices, yes, the dead guy, and her sister, Ismene while a narrator reads the story. Since I opened the movie, this poor teacher cannot get her money back. I am disgusted. There is no room for suggestive, lewd behavior in this story line.

Average Reviews:

I came to Hollywood unprepared and naive. I had no idea how the system worked. Most videos and books written about how Hollywood works are written by failed wannabes. Not this one- Mike Fenton has worked on some of the biggest films of all time. I'd say about half of the movies I loved growing up were cast by Mike over the years. This DVD helped me see how the world of Hollywood worked, and it has saved me an enormous amount of time. I now have a much more realistic view of "the industry", and I'm making headway.

Hub Culture Retrospectives: Antarctica combines awe-inspiring views of the South Pole with a hypnotic musical score based on sounds from nature. The video is a series of single-frame shots flowing from one to the other. Each frame focuses on one profound element of the landscape thus highlighting it's extreme environment and profoundness. Adding to the visual experience are sounds of rainfall lightly falling, glaciers creaking and penguins pruning likely to make the viewer fall into a trance-like state. The experience is akin to a visual massage of the soul.Stan Stalnaker has effectively captured the true essence of Antarctica while giving us a deeper understanding of our vast planet and perhaps of ourselves. I highly recommend this DVD to anyone looking for a unique visual experience to share with friends or simply to enjoy alone.

After Sunset: The Life and Times of the Drive-In Theater Review

After Sunset: The Life and Times of the Drive-In Theater
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"After Sunset: The Life & Times of the Drive-In Movie Theater" has less to do with the history of drive-in movie theaters than it does with exploring the sentimentality of the time of their peak. While the telling the history of the subject and exploring the "essence" of it does not strike a good balance (it does not tell much history--for example, it does not even say who invented the drive-in movie theater) this documentary has its heart in the right place.
Featuring interviews with John Carpenter, Samuel Z. Arkoff, John "Joe Bob Briggs" Bloom, stories of drive-in memories and commentaries create a picture of a bygone era. Director Jon Bokenkamp aslo interviews drive-in owners and others on the road while traveling with a group of friends. They are traveling back to the director's small hometown in Nebraska where he has orgnaized an event for 4th of July, screenings of movies and other various activities at a drive-in movie theater. Albeit this story structure does not hit the right balance of telling the history of drive-ins and capturing their essence in their peak, it is a fun 45 minutes looking at people's unending fascination with outdoor movie theaters--which illuminate this love brightly, like some neon marquees of some remaining drive-ins still standing today.

Nearly 63 years after its conception, the drive-in theater stands as one of America's last great icons. It represents an entire era of American culture ranging from the space race and the automobile to the emergence of the teenage and movies like Beach Blanket Bingo. But now, in the age of the multiplex and bottled water, the drive-in theater is nearly gone... it's a dinosaur. With hopes of better understanding the past, filmmaker Jon Bokenkamp leads his ragtag crew across the American West. Using drive-in theaters as their map, these four young men search for a simpler time. Talking to those who built and lived the drive-in theater, they give a true picture of what the era of the outdoor theater was all about. Whether you have ever been to a drive-in or not, still frequent a remaining one, or simply recall with fondness those starry nights of popcorn and two-bit love, you'll find After Sunset to be a unique new film about one of the great icons of 20th-century ! America. Featuring interviews with director John Carpenter, author Michael Wallis, Hollywood movie mogul Samuel Z. Arkoff (producer of Beach Blanket Bingo), and satirist and social critic John Bloom (aka Joe Bob Briggs)."A wonderful evocation of a distinct piece of Americana." - Leonard Maltin, film critic

Clarence Darrow (1974)

It was a rare thing in 1974 to record a live Broadway show--the practice was myopically blocked by unions for years. It must have been clear to all involved that this was a special event. Fonda's genius is in no way dimmed by his age. He brings Darrow to life with heart and humor... and just a little deviltry. (I saw the actual production as well--and still have the program autographed by Mr. Fonda.) This is a fine performance of a fine play, and a living document of theatical history.
