Give 'em Hell, Harry (1975) Review

Give 'em Hell, Harry (1975)

This play has three criteria for success: a good script, a masterful performance by a talented actor who looks a great deal like the subject and excellent original material. In my opinion, Harry Truman was the second best president of the twentieth century, slightly behind Franklin Roosevelt. Incredibly courageous, self-confident and yet humble, he did more to win the cold war than anyone else.
I laughed a deep belly laugh at some of the jokes, but if you are not familiar with the history of the times, you might not understand them. There is also a great deal of passion in the play. Whitmore's rendition of the "conversation" between Truman and General Douglas Macarthur is intense and very close to historically accurate. I found myself picturing the look of astonishment that must have been on the General's face when the little man that he felt was so beneath him had the temerity to dress him down. I do not know if Truman really visited a Klan rally and denounced their bigotry, if he did he showed a good deal more courage than he did sense. But as theater, it is masterful drama and I found myself wishing that he was indeed foolish enough to do it.
This is one of the best plays that I have ever seen. It deals with a man and a segment of history that drastically altered the course of human events. While short, Truman was a giant of a man and here you see some of the feistiness that made him great. Historical dramatizations rarely move me, but this one did.

Puppetry of the Penis: The Ancient Art of Genital Origami (2003) Review

Puppetry of the Penis: The Ancient Art of Genital Origami (2003)

PUPPETRY OF THE PENIS was an unexpected hot ticket in London and New York--a fifty minute comedy act that involves to two men who give a new meaning to the phrase "show and tell" by stripping buck naked and twisting their genitalia into, well, object d'art. So to speak. And this DVD offers the show before a live audience, so you can sit in on the twisting and pulling in an up-close and personal sort of way.
This sounds a lot more bizarre than it really is, as any man who ever spent part of their teenage years in the highschool locker room can tell you. Yes: it really is teenage boy humor, and Austrailian comics Simon Morley and David Friend have snatched it out of the locker room and plunked it on stage for all the world to see. There's "the boomerang," "the eye," "the Loch Ness Monster," "the baby bird," and a host of other penis impersonations--all of which are good for a giggle and some of which are downright hilarious.
Although the show is done in the nude, it isn't in the least erotic, so if that's what you're looking for you had better go some where else. And in truth, this is a show that probably works much better on stage, where there it no doubt has an "in your face" factor that leads the audience to embarrassed hilarity--and indeed, the camera spends almost as much time on audience reaction as on the performers.
Now, this is never going to make any one's short list of "must own live comedy shows." After all, the material will only stretch so far... but taken in the right spirit, it is quite amusing, and it might be the perfect video for that next party you're thinking about giving--just imagine the possibilities! The DVD package also includes a documentary on the creation of a second PUPPETRY OF THE PENIS performing company, which is also amusing in a bizarre sort of way, and a small booklet that will let viewers follow along at home if they are so inclined. An entertaining bit of fluff.

Can't believe I didn't heed the warning of the other reviewer. This movie has no merit. Very depressing and very unpleasant. Waste of time and money. An embarrassment for Errol Flynn and has no artistic merit at all. Save your money for something worth it.

Australia: Land Beyond Time (IMAX) (2004) Review

Australia: Land Beyond Time (IMAX) (2004)

Extraordinary panoramic vistas, taken from a 2-engine plane with a camera attached to its nose, amazing geological facts, and marvelous animals, most of them unique to Australia, are what we get in this superb documentary of what is both the world's smallest continent, and its largest island. Once joined to Antarctica many millions of years ago, with high mountains and lush forests, time transformed Australia into 3 million square miles of mostly arid flat land, and its creatures adapted to the different weather conditions. Fabulous and often amusing footage of kangaroos and koalas (both share the same ancestral marsupial possum), as well as desert creatures from ants to the giant and fearsome parenti lizard, and the "living contradiction," the platypus, are among the many delights shown in this film.
An event that only occurs approximately twice every century, torrential rains filling the Outback's Lake Eyre, bringing long dormant animals to life, as well as flocks of pelicans, is caught on film, and is a spectacular sight. This is a glorious but harsh land, with a strange beauty that fills the soul. Australia is described as being more like another planet than another country, and this documentary has many images rarely seen.
Directed by David Flatman, written by Flatman, Meg Morrison, and poet Les Murray, it is narrated by Alex Scott, and has a lovely score by David Bridie. Made for IMAX in 2002, every aspect of "Australia, Land Beyond Time" is excellent, is a must for anyone interested in this great country, and those of us who like to explore foreign lands without leaving home.
