Demons (Special Edition) (1986) Review

I rate this as one of the scariest and here's why. Years ago, when it was new and playing at the theater I saw it and let me tell you, seeing this film in a darkened theater is one terrifying experience. Perhaps because the demons were terrorizing the victims in a theater, I don't know, but it was beyond creepy and I still remember being scared out of mind to this day.

Dracula - Masterpiece Theatre (2007) Review

Dracula - Masterpiece Theatre (2007)

If you tend to watch the movie to save the time spent reading the book, then don't watch this movie as a substitute. Movie adaptations of this novel are difficult with the number of characters and location. Most of these movie versions get around the difficulty by combining characters or getting rid of them altogether. Other movies simply rewrite the story. This version does a little of both. Given that this was for Masterpiece Theatre, I was a little disappointed.
Renfield, Quincy Morris, the vampire sisters, and the gypsies are all gone. Jonathan Harker barely misses this fate. Disease and occult rites make an entry into the story. The end result gives the viewer (especially readers of the novel) the feeling that this was what the screenplay writer would have done if he had written the book.
Does this make it bad? It does if you are a Dracula enthusiast. If you just like a good vampire story, then this is interesting, as long as you don't think of this as Bram Stoker's Dracula.

ZERO STARS, BUT THAT ISNT AN OPTION...-So lets say, "F" for effort...
Let me start by saying I love the horror/gore genre, but junk like this needs to be put to an end...at some point enough has got to be enough...this "movie" was shot using a canon xl (at best)...apparently film was out of the question...the acting is miserable, the camera work and lighting was a joke...and the violence and gore was laughable...and I dont mean laughable like outrageous...but laughable because it is that bad...hack editing ruins every death scene...the only real gore comes in the form of various characters spitting gallons of blood after altercations...the highlight of the "movie" was a dude putting a melon on this dude head and then shooting a 9mm through it...as if things couldnt get any worse...these clowns didnt take the time to sync the dialogue to the lip motions...AVOID THIS AT ALL COSTS...you have been warned...

Elite Squad (2007) Review

Elite Squad (2007)

I loved this movie. It was largely panned by American critics, never even making it to American theaters, except for maybe one or two in NYC (none in LA).
The film provided a valid, complex viewpoint of some of the problems that modern-day Brazil faces. If you look at comments of reviews of this film on major publications' web sites (like NYTimes, LA Times, etc), you will see that the overwhelming majority of comments are from Brazilians who: 1) loved the movie, and 2) stated that the movie got the situation right.
The film shows the point of view of patriotic police officers that want to do right by their country, although they are confounded by their fellow police officers, the well-armed drug dealers, the bought-off constituents of the slums (favelas), as well as the leftist middle class that excoriates the police on the one hand for its heavy handed tactics as well as its corruption while at the same time sustaining the local drug lords by buying their product.
It is the film's viewpoint towards the leftist middle class that I think doomed the film to never get a proper showing in the US. That, and the fact that this "honest" police force feels obligated (and in the eyes of some in the viewing public, justified) to use extra-judicial, heavy handed tactics to get results in fighting crime.
SEE THIS FILM!

An action-packed thriller that follows an elite police battalion (BOPE) tasked with cleaning up a drug-ridden Rio de Janeiro slum in advance of the pope's 1997 visit. A team of trained killers, they struggle to do what's right in a corrupt system and dangerous neighborhood.

Kazuo Umezz's Horror Theater: Six Dark Tales to Make You Cringe Review

Kazuo Umezz's Horror Theater: Six Dark Tales to Make You Cringe

I completely disagree with the other review here. I've watched three of the six installments (House of Bugs, Present, and Wish), and I must say that all three were highly imaginative, original, and entertaining. The atmosphere is excellent through the use of lighting and surrealistic effects. Not particularly scary, but definitely eerie.
House of Bugs - Kiyoshi Kurosawa directs this one. The situation is intriguing: a husband and wife remember important events in completely different ways. This disconnect in perception causes significant friction between them. The story gets more and more interesting as it progresses. The lighting and sound are very nicely done in places, and even the CGI is effectively implemented. This is a nice little psychological gem with some imaginative sequences.
Present - Santa Claus gets royally pissed off and slays the hell outta six teens at a shady hotel. This is a basic slasher that is accentuated with some bells and whistles. The set designs and lighting are excellent, using shades of deep red and green that create a strong holiday mood. The black humor is a nice touch, especially the very brief cameo by some zombie reindeer. There is also quite a bit of blood and dismemberment. This entry still manages to toss in a decent psychological twist involving perception.
Wish - A boy with no friends decides to make a life-size puppet out of household items to keep him company, but later abandons it after meeting a cute girl. Needless to say, the puppet gets really pissed off. Similar to other Umezu installments, the atmosphere is excellent - this time using surreal-colored skylines to great effect. The doll in this film is one of the most intimidating in cinematic history - sporting wire dreadlocks and nails for teeth! The climax is simply awesome, with a long-lasting and violent one-on-one slugfest between the kid and the doll. Good stuff.
I was so impressed with the entertainment value of these three that I simply had to buy the whole series in order to check out the rest. If you're sick of all the garbage Hollywood has been coming out with and actually want something for sheer entertainment value, this is a great series.
