Demons (Special Edition) (1986) Review

I rate this as one of the scariest and here's why. Years ago, when it was new and playing at the theater I saw it and let me tell you, seeing this film in a darkened theater is one terrifying experience. Perhaps because the demons were terrorizing the victims in a theater, I don't know, but it was beyond creepy and I still remember being scared out of mind to this day.

Friday the 13th (Theatrical Cut) (2009) Review

Friday the 13th (Theatrical Cut) (2009)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In 1980, Pamela Voorhees set out to kill all the counselors at Camp Crystal Lake. Several years ago, the counselors did nothing as Mrs. Voorhees' son, Jason, drowned in the lake. Now, as the camp is about to re-open, Mrs. Voorhees has returned to seek revenge for her son and she only has one more victim before she accomplishes that goal. Unfortunately for Mrs. Voorhees, she didn't count on this particular camp counselor decapitating her and ending her reign of terror once and for all. Unbeknownst to anyone at the time, Jason was still alive and witnessed his mother's gruesome death. Now, in the present day, Jason is the one who seeks revenge and anyone who even comes near Camp Crystal Lake is at risk of feeling his onslaught.
It's been something like five and a half years since we last saw Jason Voorhees in the theater. So was it worth the wait? Does the remake measure up to the rest of the franchise? Is it a remake worth seeing at all? Does it continue the trend with 2009 being a strong year for the horror genre? The short answer to all of these questions is yes.
I've always been partial to the Friday the 13th franchise. Jason Voorhees has always been my favorite when it comes slasher films. So I was beyond excited by the time this hit theaters. The film opens with a flashback that chronicles what would be the ending to the original film. Jump to the present day. Some kids decide to hike out into the woods to have some fun and wind up about a half mile from Camp Blood. Everything is fun and games until one of them turns up missing. The survivors wind up exploring and get picked off one by one while Jason wears a bag over his head. After the scene in the trailer where Jason runs towards the girl on the ground and swings his machete, we get a black screen with "Friday the 13th" in red plastered across it. Six weeks later, Clay is looking for his sister, Whitney. She was one of the victims of the attack we just witnessed. It seems as though everyone has given up hope looking for her except him. Meanwhile, Trent and his friends are going up to his dad's cabin for the weekend which just so happens to reside on Camp Crystal Lake. It's basically just more pigs being sent out to slaughter from there. Jason's bag gets pulled off right before he disposes of one of his victims in a barn. It's there that he stumbles across a hockey mask and things begin to pick up from there.
The film definitely delivers in all of the elements that make up the formula to a Friday the 13th film. There's plenty of T&A and sex for any sexhound. I haven't seen any R-rated film with this much nudity and sexual content in quite a while. The kills are also pretty satisfactory for a Friday fan. I think Trent's death is probably the most memorable, but I'm partial to Amanda's death because it was an interesting twist on the sleeping bag kill. Officer Bracke's kill was also a favorite of mine. Then, of course, there's Jason's death. It's interesting since it seems obvious how things are going to turn out for Jason, but it winds up happening in a round-a-bout way. Something is thrown in there to throw the audience off and that not many would see coming. Kind of like a, "Oh, maybe he'll die this way instead," kind of thing. Thinking back on it, it also felt like a throwback to one of the earlier sequels, which is pretty cool.
We can't finish this review without talking about Derek Mears as the man behind the hockey mask. I feel like he did a great job. I prefer him over Ken Kirzinger in Freddy Vs Jason. He kind of reminded me as a cross between C.J. Graham(part VI) and Kane Hodder(parts VII-IX). He also ran at times, which may put some people off. I actually enjoyed the running quite a bit. It reminded me of Jason in The Final Chapter, which is my favorite F13 film. He had the body movements down to perfection and is a worthy addition to the list of actors who have donned the hockey mask.
My one complaint is that it seemed like it was hard to see what was going on in certain scenes. The camera would be too shaky or scenes wouldn't have enough lighting and be too dark. It's really a minor complaint though as it usually only lasted a few seconds when it did occur.
So, all in all, I feel like it was well worth the wait for this film. I am really hoping it does well because I would welcome sequels with open arms. The remake follows the Friday the 13th formula extremely well. Right down to the ending. I guess the only thing that's not like some of the previous sequels is the acting, which seems to be top notch for a slasher film. As a Friday the 13th fan, I'm more than satisfied with the remake. To tell the truth, it was just nice to see a film with Jason Voorhees in theaters again.
Rating - 7.5/10

ZERO STARS, BUT THAT ISNT AN OPTION...-So lets say, "F" for effort...
Let me start by saying I love the horror/gore genre, but junk like this needs to be put to an end...at some point enough has got to be enough...this "movie" was shot using a canon xl (at best)...apparently film was out of the question...the acting is miserable, the camera work and lighting was a joke...and the violence and gore was laughable...and I dont mean laughable like outrageous...but laughable because it is that bad...hack editing ruins every death scene...the only real gore comes in the form of various characters spitting gallons of blood after altercations...the highlight of the "movie" was a dude putting a melon on this dude head and then shooting a 9mm through it...as if things couldnt get any worse...these clowns didnt take the time to sync the dialogue to the lip motions...AVOID THIS AT ALL COSTS...you have been warned...

Stage Fright (1987) Review

Stage Fright (1987)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the debut film of Michele Soavi, director of the classic Cemetery Man. Soavi, who worked as assistant director to Dario Argento and Lamberto Bava among others, has crafted an intense and stylish slasher about an escaped homicidal maniac stalking the cast and crew of a musical that have decided to base their play on him. With brutally gory scares and an overpowering claustrophobic atmosphere, this has some stunning sequences that outshine many of its American counterparts that came out in the 80's (especially in a scene where one of the castmembers must retrieve a key, in order to escape, from underneath the killers feet!). Look for John Morghen (Gates Of Hell, Make Them Die Slowly) in a small role. This release from Anchor Bay is a great transfer (restored from original Rome vault materials) and is totally uncut.
On a side note- Director Terry Gilliam met Soavi at the Brussels Fantasy Film Festival where Stagefright was being shown. He liked this film so much that he made Soavi a 2nd unit director on his next film-The Adventures Of Baron Munchausen.

Evil Dead Trap 2 Review

Evil Dead Trap 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For fans of the first film, be advised that this "sequel" has very little connection to the original. In fact, "Evil Dead Trap 2" is so out of control it should have been titled differently. The story concerns a woman who goes through her pathetic life apparently searching for a male companion and is also a deranged serial killer. The graphic killing sequences and gross-out images of the first film are generally absent here except in the last half hour (if you make it that far). By the time anything of interest starts happening, it is so disjointed from the rest of the film, making little sense on any level, that it is a sure sign of a corrupted screenplay. The three main leads are entirely unattractive and are possibly the worst actors in all of Asian cinema. The film also drags scenes out way too long, an example being a totally useless opening of the main character walking through the city in slow motion. The scene could have been removed entirely and would have spared the viewer precious minutes of their lives. Unfortunately, there are too many of these types of exposition throughout the entire film. I gave the film two stars instead of one based primarily on a few graphic set pieces towards the end that are possible indicators that somewhere in this mess a good movie may have existed. Anyway, "Evil Dead Trap 2" is not a good movie, certainly not worth a purchase or possibly even a rental....view at your own risk.

Starlite Drive-In Theater: A Dusk Til Dawn Marathon Review

Starlite Drive-In Theater: A Dusk Til Dawn Marathon
Average Reviews:

Not a bad set to own if you like crappy movies in a weird sort of way (Like MST3K does). I found the movie "The Van" by far the best one of the lot, and "Van Nuys Blvd" to be second best. "Pom Pom Girls" would be good if they showed more "Pom Pom Girls" and less John Carradine. After those 3 though, most were very forgettable unless you want a nostalgic trip looking at old products and signs of the 50's, 60's & 70's. One nice surprise though were the cartoons and snack bar ads before the movie. Definitely was a plus. A bit of trivia, on "Hustler Squad", the one real dish of the movie (Anna) was a former Miss Finland in 1974 and runner up in Miss Universe. Watch the movie with the volume off unless you want to hear some really awful sound effects.

Kazuo Umezz's Horror Theater: Six Dark Tales to Make You Cringe Review

Kazuo Umezz's Horror Theater: Six Dark Tales to Make You Cringe
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I completely disagree with the other review here. I've watched three of the six installments (House of Bugs, Present, and Wish), and I must say that all three were highly imaginative, original, and entertaining. The atmosphere is excellent through the use of lighting and surrealistic effects. Not particularly scary, but definitely eerie.
House of Bugs - Kiyoshi Kurosawa directs this one. The situation is intriguing: a husband and wife remember important events in completely different ways. This disconnect in perception causes significant friction between them. The story gets more and more interesting as it progresses. The lighting and sound are very nicely done in places, and even the CGI is effectively implemented. This is a nice little psychological gem with some imaginative sequences.
Present - Santa Claus gets royally pissed off and slays the hell outta six teens at a shady hotel. This is a basic slasher that is accentuated with some bells and whistles. The set designs and lighting are excellent, using shades of deep red and green that create a strong holiday mood. The black humor is a nice touch, especially the very brief cameo by some zombie reindeer. There is also quite a bit of blood and dismemberment. This entry still manages to toss in a decent psychological twist involving perception.
Wish - A boy with no friends decides to make a life-size puppet out of household items to keep him company, but later abandons it after meeting a cute girl. Needless to say, the puppet gets really pissed off. Similar to other Umezu installments, the atmosphere is excellent - this time using surreal-colored skylines to great effect. The doll in this film is one of the most intimidating in cinematic history - sporting wire dreadlocks and nails for teeth! The climax is simply awesome, with a long-lasting and violent one-on-one slugfest between the kid and the doll. Good stuff.
I was so impressed with the entertainment value of these three that I simply had to buy the whole series in order to check out the rest. If you're sick of all the garbage Hollywood has been coming out with and actually want something for sheer entertainment value, this is a great series.
