(More customer reviews)If you have the cd (or vinyl of course!) of L&D, or if you saw them live on this tour in 1978 then do not buy this DVD under any circumstances. This has been not been approved by the band and you can see why. It is advertised as the "Live & Dangerous" DVD - but there is just one major flaw - it contains no music or footage from Live & Dangerous !!!! If you are expecting to see a film of a concert this is not it. It is a critical review (exactly the same rubbish as on the "Thin Lizzy - Inside" DVD)by a group of people who constantly interrupt every song (ONLY 1 MINUTE of each song shown - and only 6 songs reviewed !) featured while they talk about chord changes and whether all the singing/playing was 'live' which wears thin after a very short time. Shocking to think someone actually planned this whole thing and got paid to do it. An absolute insult to Phil's memory.

(More customer reviews)If you're a Sting fan or just a fan of great music, this DVD is for you. I've seen Sting in concert 3 times. This tops anything I've ever heard. Crystal clear picture and sound, insightful interviews (not too long), and priceless music. This DVD has 17 songs on it. And if I had to pick a favorite, I could not. Although, the rendition of Dead Man's Rope almost made me cry (and I'm a grown man) lol. There are also 3 songs I've never heard on this... That Sinking Feeling, All Would Envy, and Like a Beautiful Smile. All good, but the latter being awesome. This is a no brainer... just buy it. Enjoy!

Filmed in 2002 at the Tivoli Theater in Chatanooga, TN, Travis treats his fans to a host of favorites and covers material through his "Strong Enough" album. Perhaps one of the more underrated musicians in country music, Travis ably demonstrates why he should be a superstar with his bluesy vocals, excellent guitar-playing, and on-stage showmanship. He has the audience in the palm of his hand from the beginning till the end. Among the highlights on the DVD are fan favorites like "It's A Great Day to Be Alive", "I'm Gonna Be Somebody", "Country Club", "Strong Enough to Be Your Man" and a gorgeous acoustic version of "Anymore" in addition to covers of Hank Williams, Jr. ("Old Habits") and Charlie Daniels ("Long-Haired Country Boy").

Paul Simon - Live at the Tower Theatre (1980) Review

(More customer reviews)Paul Simon "Live At The Tower Theatre", may be the finest solo Paul Simon concert ever filmed. This is bare bones Simon, with a four piece band, that starred with him in the movie "One Trick Pony". It is actually nice to hear the songs, without the different world music arrangements and caribbean orchestras, that plagued his live shows during the nineties. The band is made up of ex Stuff members Steve Gadd[drums],The late Richard Tee[keyboards and vocals], The late Eric Gale[guitar], and Tony Levin[bass]. These guys crank, and may well have been Paul Simons best band ever assembled. The rockin "Ace In The Hole", is one of several cuts from the much overlooked album 'One Trick Pony", and features Richard Tee sharing vocals with Simon, while pounding his gospel tinged keyboards. Other favorites include, "Late In The Evening", "Fifty Ways To Leave Your Lover", "Me And Julio", and "One Trick Pony", to name a few. The sound and picture quality is very good, considering that the show was recorded in 1980. The only negative, is that the concert is a tad short at 55 minutes, but this is all quality, and Paul Simon never sounded better in concert. Paul Simon along with top session men, Steve Gadd, Eric Gale, Richard Tee and Tony Levin, is not to be missed, if you are a fan of vintage Paul Simon.

The Rolling Stones - Four Flicks (2003) Review

(More customer reviews)the four flicks dvd is simply great. it takes you in the back stage, in the studio where the stones rehearsed, it takes on stage for three very different concerts in New York, London and Paris.
It gives a good sense of how good the band is: the Stones are just excellent: very energetic and very inspired.
It's very hard to tell which of the three concert is the best. I should probably say the concert at the Madison Square Garden (first dvd) or the one in London's Twickenham Stadium. In both concerts the Stones performed some of their most solid rock: Jumpin'Jack Flash, Satisfaction, Honky Tonk Women and so on.
But the concert in Paris is interesting for other reasons: Charlie Watts saying to the public that he wanted to sing a song but Mick Jagger would not let him (a joke that made everybody laugh) and Keith Richards singing Hoagy Carmicheal's Nearness of You (a song that Keith had recorded many years before, that can be heard in the soundtrack of the movie Basquiat).
It's a wonderful wonderful dvd set. It's a great document of the Stones for the ages.

Jekyll & Hyde - The Musical (Widescreen Edition) Review

(More customer reviews)I'm suspecting that there are two types of people who are approaching this DVD, a filmed version of the stage production of "Jekyll & Hyde". One, someone familiar with the show--perhaps saw it and liked it or has the soundtrack--and wants to check out this variation. Or two, someone discovering it anew. It tempts me to write two reviews because while I love "Jekyll & Hyde", it's slightly unfortunate that this is the production most people will get a chance to judge.
So let me preface this by saying that I really am a fan of this show. Some people consider "Jekyll" sort of a "Phantom-lite". I, myself, have never been the biggest supporter of "Phantom of the Opera". It's fine, full of bombast, but hardly the revolutionary experience that people give it credit for. "Jekyll" does play to similar themes, but has a stronger overall soundtrack. Instead of a couple of showstoppers like "Phantom", "Jekyll" is filled with memorable power ballads. Not the most complicated show musically, it is very accessible. And when you have great singers, these simpler and emotionally charged songs become pop opera and quite moving.
So, without hesitation, I recommend the original Broadway Cast recording!!! Robert Cuccioli, Linda Eder and Christiane Noll are superb. You couldn't hope for better.
But here's the problem with this DVD, it's not this great cast--NO, the star is David Hasselhoff. So you see my problem, don't you? Look, I'm not going to be unkind--it's an easy target. Let's just say this. If you're a fan of the show, he doesn't completely ruin it. And it's not like there are any other versions to add to your collections. If you are new to the show, I'm still recommending it provisionally. I wish there were another option. If you like the show, though--and I think you will--please rush over and buy the 1997 Cast recording. Treat yourself to how "Jekyll & Hyde" should really sound.KGHarris, 10/06.

Bob Marley and the Wailers Live at the Rainbow (1977) Review

This June 1977 concert at London's Rainbow Theater captures the recently reconfigured Wailers ending a European tour to promote the masterful 'Exodus' album. The rare videotaped performances of 'Trenchtown Rock' and 'Rebel Music', and 'Crazy Baldhead', dating from the earlier Wailers repertoire, and performed wonderfully well here, are the treasures of this collection, however. Missed notes on some songs, including the beginning of 'Exodus', and guitarist Junior Marvin's failure to notice his boss Bob about to start singing 'Lively Up Yourself', are minor annoyances, as is the loss of Aston Barrett's famous distinctive bass line in 'No More Trouble', jettisoned in favor of a 'new', harder sound (surely a reaction to the exciting energy of London's 'new wave' summer of 1977). By the way, it always annoyed me that the front cover picture on the VHS and now the DVD editions is most definitely not from this 1977 show, but rather is the same photo that graces the 1975 Live at the Lyceum album. I wish those responsible would show some commitment to historical accuracy, and use a photo from the actual show in '77. The DVD sound and picture are good, considering the age of the videotape source. I purchased my DVD copy of 'Live at the Rainbow' from Amazon France, and it includes an accompanying DVD entitled 'Carribbean Nights', which is an informative and enjoyable look at Marley's life and times. While 'Caribbean Nights' contains no full-length performances, it does contain several exciting if brief film clips of various performances such as the Leeds, UK 1973 show with Peter Tosh. Hopefully these early performances will someday make it onto DVD as well.

Sade - Live Concert Home Video (1993) Review

(More customer reviews)Recently Sade ended their seven-year hiatus with the fine year 2000 LOVER'S ROCK album, which is musically so-close-yet-so-far from their 1984-1993 recordings. SADE LIVE (recorded in San Diego, October 1993) closes the book on the first decade of their/her musical career, presenting live versions of eighteen songs culled from the first four albums. Obviously this is a must-have for fans, but anybody who wants to hear these memorable songs again periodically should be happy with either this collection and/or the simultaneously-issued videoclip compilation (LIFE PROMISE PRIDE LOVE).
All of the hits are here, plus a few choice album tracks. The remastered 5.1 sound is excellent on this DVD release, capturing their live sound with clarity and fullness. The DVD has a few minor extras besides the surround sound, such as chapter access, a discography, a brief biography (basically a press release for LOVER'S ROCK), and offering the option to display lyrics karaoke-style on the screen in several languages.
For the most part, the group sticks closely to the original studio versions in these performances, although occasionally the group's subtle jazz touches become more overt (particularly on SMOOTH OPERATOR). Mostly though, vocalist Sade Adu is in the forefront, singing with a quiet fire and at times physically moving within the flow of the music. Never demonstrative either vocally or in her stage mannerisms, she nonetheless is a captivating presence both to hear and to look at, and her voice is in top form throughout this concert.

Peter Gabriel - Growing Up Live (2003) Review

A few things up front, there is some overdubbing. No big deal, as the original concert had Peter talking to the audience using almost no English. There are reportedly a few scenes where Melanie Gabriel was given the opportunity to re-sing a few lines, but other than that this concert is basically untouched audibly.
Some other people, (Fabio Vampel from NYC USA who thinks we won't notice that he posted twice) will lead you to believe that the video quality is poor and the camera angles are limited. Nothing could be further from the truth. There are sometimes ten cameras visible in a single frame at a time let alone the other 15 they used in shooting the concert. The transfer has more than enough bit rate cursing through it, it's anamorphic, and any DVD player with a good deinterlacer and a DVI output to a High Def TV will show you just how fantastic this picture transfer really is. For those who think that's unfair and it should look great on all TV's and DVD players... sorry, it ain't gonna happen. ^_^;
The recording style/mix is a lot more raw than the Secret World concert. Sounds a lot more like the sound of a 'real' concert. And the 5.1 DTS mix on this disc is truly spectacular. Peter's vocals on quieter songs will be a revelation for those who have the proper sound set up to take advantage of it.
The picture quality ranks among the best I've seen for concerts. Not quite as sharp as Bruce Springsteen's latest live DVD that was shot for HBO, but Peter's comes off as smother and more 'film like'. Green hues just pop off the screen and the darks are very prominent and moody. The disc being anamorphic was seen as a given but it's VERY much appreciated just the same.
Now that I've watched it, there's much to criticize in way it's shot. Actually, more like in the way they chose to edit it. It leaves very little to the imagination. There's too many under the stage shots and they don't make ANY effort to hide the camera guys and technicians running around in BRIGHT orange?! You get the feeling they wanted you to think you were 'in on their secrets' but it comes off as distracting from the songs instead. Also there's some head scratching sceen cutting and editing. Let's face it, stilling the frame and having it fade to B&W looks so... dumb. Frankly it's all the more irritating because most of it looks so cool.
Take note, though, that the positive stomps the negative. We have a solid list of classics and new tunes (though having Rythm of the Heat instead of Animal Nation would have been nice). We have an incredible audio mix of it all. And we have superior packaging along with a well crafted tour to pick from. Songs like Mercy Street and Signal to Noise will remind you why Peter is a master at show atmosphere with visuals never overtaking the reason we're all here.
Which is to enjoy the music.

The Making of "Miss Saigon" (2006) Review

(More customer reviews)As some of the reviewers below have pointed out, this DVD is primarly about the auditions for Miss Saigon, and in that sense it is merely a "tease" for those of us craving to see the actual musical on DVD. And while it is exciting to see Lea Salonga audtion and be selected for the lead role, it is overall a very disappointing DVD because of what it is not. I cannot understand why Miss Saigon, one of the greatest musicals ever, has never been filmed for DVD release. Perhaps if the recent DVD release of the musical Chess (another fantastic musical) with Josh Groban is successful, someone will release this outstanding musical for the enjoyment of generations to come.

John Fogerty: The Long Road Home in Concert (2006) Review

(More customer reviews)The Long Road Home concert DVD includes 28 songs from John Fogerty's solo career along with his Creedence Clearwater Revival hits. The concert was Filmed in 2005 in Los Angeles. The DVD is an hour and a half long (99 minutes).
I have always enjoyed CCR and Fogerty, and this is an amazing concert includes some of the greatest songs from CCR and Fogerty. The DVD starts with an introduction then rips right into Travelin' Band, Green River, and Who'll Stop The Rain which are a fantastic start to the first set.
However, some of my favorite CCR/Fogrety songs don't come until well into the concert with Hey Tonight, Down On The Corner, Centerfield, Up Around The Bend, The Old Man Down The Road, Fortunate Son, and Bad Moon Rising all not coming after the first hour in. Fortunately, Rockin' All Over The World, Proud Mary and a bonus rendition of Deja Vu (All Over Again) bring the concert to a rousing close.
If you are looking at buying the Long Road Home DVD and the Long Home CD, it's interesting to point out that while they include most of the same tracks, the track orders are different and there are some variations. The DVD tracks:

The change in order makes it difficult to see what the differences are. However, the DVD includes three tracks not in the CD: Blue Moon Nights, She's Got Baggage, and Tombstone Shadow. The DVD also has a bonus rendition of Deja Vu (All Over Again). The CD includes Almost Saturday Night, which isn't in the concert DVD and two versions of Fortunate Son (one live and one studio).
As with the Long Road Home CD, moteably missing from concert are Suzie Q, Midnight Special, and a few others, all of which are greatly missed. Nevertheless, this DVD is highly recommended for Forgerty and CCR fans.

Celine Dion: Live in Las Vegas - A New Day (2008) Review

(More customer reviews)That Celine Dion is one of the most generous and sincere artists in music today is pretty well-known. While she has taken a beating from the media and from detractors for being over-the-top in some of her vocals, a bit too dorky in her performances and in interviews, she has remained (sans the chest-beating) true to herself and to the music and fans that made her famous.
This DVD set is not only for those who saw the show and want a copy of it to remember, or for those who didn't get to see it and wanted to, but it really feels first and foremost like a gift to her die-hard fans. Most others wouldn't care for the extended amount of footage (over 3 hours worth) dedicated to the trivia about the show, its creation, execution and evolution over the past four years.
I did see the show twice in 2003, and feel that the DVD does a wonderful job of recreating the experience, but if you didn't get to Vegas and sit in the theater that was specifically built for this show, it's not the same.
A couple of other differences for those who saw the show: Nature Boy was omitted as the opening and swapped out for the more appropriate "A New Day Has Come" .. I always thought it was odd that the title song from the show was not sung back in 2003. Also removed is the tacky and ill-fitting cover of "Fever", but added in are "Love Can Move Mountains" (one of my favorites of hers of all time) and "River Deep, Mountain High" in full Tina Turner Tribute mode.
I do regret the omission of two of my personal favorite songs from the shows I saw in 2003 - Je'taime Encore (I Love You Still), one of her most haunting French-language songs she's ever recorded, and the show-ending "What a Wonderful World" that, as she sang it, had black and white photos of people from the audience on the giant LCD screen behind her. It was a touching and intimate way to end a very theatrical production. You CAN, however, get both of the audio recordings of these two songs on the live CD of the show that was released a few years back.
The fan tribute on here, while often cheesy, is also an endearing look at some of her biggest fans. That Celine was gracious and kind as she met personally with them all, moved to tears by some of their personal 'thank you's to her, underscores the grace and humility that accompanies the great gift of song she received.

Neil Diamond - Greatest Hits Live (1989) Review

(More customer reviews)This DVD is indeed in Dolby 5.1. As a previous reviewer mentioned, it defaults to Dolby PCM but can quickly be changed in the AUDIO menu of the DVD.
The audio and video on this DVD are extremely well done. The sound is better - than - CD quality and the performance was edited to perfection. The crew truly captured the concert in its entirety: Neil, crowd, band, and lights. The different camera angels work to further enhance this divine display of talent.
As for the concert, Diamond once again poured out his heart and soul for his beloved fans who couldn't contain themselves on such rocking numbers as "I'm Alive" and "Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show." It is clear from this performance, as it has been through all of his songs and other concerts, that the fans ARE his life.
Neil is at his best in this show, belting out beautiful slow tunes as well as spine - chilling renditions of his more vivacious hits. His medley tribute to John Lennon consistently brings tears to my eyes when I watch it. We get a REAL treat when he sings "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" with Linda Press, his female vocalist. They are perfect together. Their amazing chemistry translates into a version of the song that is superior to his duet with Barbra Steisand.
Here's the bottom line: If you get the slightest bit of joy from listening to one of Neil's songs, you HAVE to buy this DVD.

The Allman Brothers Band - Live at the Beacon Theatre (2003) Review

Here The Allman Brothers Band present an uncut 2 Hour and 48 minute concert recorded in March 2003 at The Beacon Theater in New York. Although a few Allman Brothers classics like Ramblin Man, Jessica, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, and Revival are not here they are included on other video releases and what is included here is excellent and worthy of 5 stars. The 5.1 sound and video quality are excellent and the band is as tight as they have ever been. This version of the Allman Brothers Band (Founding members Gregg Allman, Jaimoe, and Butch Trucks, along with longtime band members Warren Haynes, Marc Quinones, and Oteil Burbridge, and more recent addition Derek Trucks doing a good job filling Dickie Betts' shoes) seem to be really enjoying themselves on stage and it comes through in the quality of the music.
Besides the concert, the double DVD release also includes approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes of interviews and behind the scenes footage. There is a also a very good dressing room performance of Old Friend by Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks along with a photo gallery and discography.

Blue Man Group - The Complex Rock Tour Live (2003) Review

(More customer reviews)I love everything about Blue Man Group: the concept; the music; the humor; and, of course, the weirdness. This DVD is NOT of one of the typical BMG shows from New York, Boston, Chicago, or Las Vegas, rather, it is a concert from their recent 'Complex Rock Tour', which is totally different materiel. The DVD was actually taken from two shows, one in Dallas, and one in Minneapolis. I was fortunate enough to be at the Minneapolis show that this DVD is partially taken from, and watching this is almost as good as being there.
The musical performances, showmanship, sound quality, and cinematography on the DVD are breathtaking, and make me want to go see BMG again as soon as possible. There are standout performances by guest vocalists Tracy Bonham and Venus Hum (in the greatest dress I have ever seen anywhere on anyone.) I would have liked to see the Bonham opening set (especially the Led Zeppelin violin recital), but unfortunately the producers didn't accommodate my desires. Here both vocalists are used to excellent effect.
The music itself is potently addictive (I have the soundtrack CD in my car) and intriguing. Of course BMG is known for percussion (which I adore), and that is spotlighted to excellent effect on the DVD. The whole band is wonderful, and provides an excellent, and often whimsical, backdrop for the antics of the three Blue Men. Particular standouts for me are "Above", "Time to Start", "Up On The Roof", and the beautiful, haunting tribute to September 11 victims, "Exhibit 13." Also of note are the comedic links used in which an offstage recorded voice gives instructions in 'Rock Star Movements' which the Blue Men then teach the audience (my personal favorites are Numbers 4 and 237.)
The DVD has a couple of extras, including the music videos for "Sing Along" (featuring a dazed looking Dave Matthews), "The Current", and the magnificently minimalist "Exhibit 13." Be sure to watch these, as they give a totally different perspective on the songs. You also want to catch the DVD credits. I won't say why, but trust me on this one.
All told, this is an excellent introduction to the eccentricity that is Blue Man Group, and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in music, comedy, or general oddity.

(More customer reviews)This new edition of the Les Miserables 10th Anniversary Concert (taped in 1995 at the Royal Albert Hall in London) is a welcome new edition for any person who found the original concert enjoyable and thrilling. The 2-DVD set comes in a good quality hard case with new artwork. The performances continue to be mostly excellent and one really does not miss the staging too much. There are several new positive additions to this edition. First is the wide-screen presentation of the concert. It was painfully obvious at certain points during the original release (especially the bigger numbers) that you were missing some of the singers on the sides. The new wide-screen presentation opens up the experience so you can watch the concert as it was originally taped. The second positive aspect of this issue is that the whole concert is on one side of one disk, which makes it much more convenient to watch. The third is the inclusion of the "Stage By Stage" Documentary from the late 80s tracking the recording of the Complete Symphonic Recording as a supplement on the second disk. Finally, for those who want to, you can follow along with new (optional) on-screen lyrics.
However, this edition is not without its disappointments. The first and by far the biggest disappointment is how it's only presented in stereo and not Dolby Digital 5.1 or better. Not having a digital audio option in 2008 is ridiculous and I would have greatly put up with changing disks if it meant having a better quality performance. The second disappointment is the deletion of parts of the concert previously available, which include part of "Little People" and the speeches by the creative talent behind the show at the end of the concert before the encore. Even if space was limited on the first disk, these deletions could have easily been put on the second disk as supplementary material.
So, while the concert itself continues to be quite enjoyable and there are some new additions that makes it a must have for any Les Miserable fan, there are some basic disappointments that keep this edition from being perfect.
