Virginia Creepers: The Horror Host Tradition of the Old Dominion Review

Virginia Creepers: The Horror Host Tradition of the Old Dominion
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you grew up in Virginia in during the 1950's - 1990's this is a must have DVD. The disc covers essentially every local TV late night horror host frm the 1950's to the present.
It includes many interviews with the (in most cases) still living hosts including favorites of mine like Dr. Madbllod, Bowman Body and Count Gore DeVol. Also iterviewed are fans, stage crew, producers, other actors and many more. Quite a few humerous anecotes including the theft of a coffin prop in Hampton, VA in the 1960's that local teens "borrowed" and sold .50 chances to have your photo taken in the coffin.
The DVD includes many clips from these classic shows.
Brings back a lot of wonderful memories. My only regret is hat it's only two hours long! I hope they will make a Virignia Creepers Part 2 with more interviews clips.
You will enjoy this DVD and be nostalgic for the days when there was more local programing!

For more than 50 years, the airwaves of the Commonwealth have been pleasantly haunted by some of the most creative, hilarious and enduring horror hosts in the country.Since 1958, kids in Virginia have been staying up late to catch characters like The Bowman Body, Dr. Madblood, Count Gore De Vol, Sir Graves Ghastly and Dr. Gruesome in the act of comic relief. And to this day, on TV and on the internet, horror hosting is still going strong in the Old Dominion. This documentary explores one of the nation's richest traditions with extensive interviews with dozens of hosts, actors and producers. It also features audio and video thought lost to time and even uncovers the history of four shows that were previously undocumented! The film is a full 120 minutes feature with a music video, mini-documentary and lots of additional footage in the deleted scenes. If you are tired of spending another weekend with no horror host to look forward to, this film is for you no matter where you grew up!

Behind the Burly Q (2010) Review

Behind the Burly Q (2010)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In the golden days of entertainment when it appeared that the moving pictures were threatening to kill the live vaudeville show, the answer seemed clear. Give audiences something they couldn't see in the movie house. And so burlesque was born. Keeping the variety and comedic elements so crucial to vaudeville, burlesque merely upped the skin quotient by adding a strip, a tease, and a striptease. (The film taught me the three didn't always go together!) And a new era of entertainment and a new style of celebrity were born. The colorful documentary "Behind the Burly Q" examines this historical phenomenon and stands as a unique and important look back through history. Filmmaker Leslie Zemeckis deftly weaves archival footage with contemporary interviews to give an exclusive peek at a nearly forgotten art form. And now, if ever, is the time--while there are still first hand accounts to add depth and dimension to the discussion.
Although there were some downbeat components to burlesque--in fact, many of the earliest performers hailed from difficult or abusive backgrounds--the film doesn't' wallow in negative. The ladies interviewed seem to be proud of their status and contribution, as if the stage offered them an escape and not merely exploitation. In those days, it could lead to power, fame and (most importantly) financial stability. And it wasn't just about baring it all, there was an artistic component and outlet involved. I kept thinking about the musical "Gypsy" and the number You Gotta Get A Gimmick (and indeed, the real Gypsy Rose Lee is featured in the film's background material), and the individual ladies often did have a singular claim to fame. One example is the acrobat who moved to the burlesque arena that eventually went on to be the first theme park Tinkerbell flying over nightly crowds at the country's largest attraction (hint, it involved a Magic Castle)!
The real treasure with "Behind the Burly Q" is the preservation and assembly of the performances. The film is noteworthy for that alone. But to get the feedback and additional insight provided in the interviews, this presents an element that might have been lost without this documentary. Even Alan Alda chimes in, his father Robert was big on the vaudeville circuit and was present for the transition into burlesque. The contemporary influence that burlesque has had is unquestionable, and this film is an insightful and entertaining look back through entertainment history. KGHarris, 3/11.

Theatre of Death (1967) Review

Theatre of Death (1967)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Theatre Of Death (1967) is really a horror film that's also a murder mystery. First off, let me say that the DVD transfer is outstanding. This 89 minute movie is 44 years old, but it looks like it was made yesterday. Basically this movie is about a theatre in Paris called the Theatre Of Death, a place where horror plays are the norm. These plays are directed by Phillipe Darvas (Christopher Lee). While these plays are going on, murders start occurring all over town and the bodies show signs of vampirism. It is thought that the murders could be linked to the theatre in some way. Darvas is an early suspect. I'll leave it there. Watch to find out what happens.
This movie also stars Lelia Goldoni, Julian Glover, Evelyn Laye, and Jenny Till. This movie looks and feels like a Hammer film to a certain degree, except that its atmosphere and mood are darker and spookier. The cinematography is great. The sets and props are top notch. This movie has some dull parts and can be confusing, but you just have to give it a chance. After all, it's a murder mystery that needs to be solved.
The widescreen DVD comes with some pretty good extras, such as the theatrical trailer, radio spots, poster and still gallery, a Christopher Lee bio, and a feature called Sinister Theatrics, which is an 11 minute interview with Christopher Lee. I found it very interesting.
I recommend this movie.

Riot on 42nd Street Review

Riot on 42nd Street
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Well it took long enough. After many problems and release date changes Riot on 42nd Street is finally available, but was it worth the wait?
The film centers around a Grindhouse type theater located on "the deuce," the theater's owner returns from a stint in prison after a run in with a drug pusher went wrong. After deciding to re-open the theater he ends up butting heads with a rival club owner. Eventually all hell breaks loose..
I'll be honest here, the film isn't that great. You've got Jeff Fahey playing a cop who pretty much just stands around doing nothing and the various gang members in the film seem more like Broadway dancers than violent criminals. To top it off the film moves at a snails pace.
Among all the bad there is some good. The movie offers an honest look at the 42nd St. of the 80's, smoke filled porn theaters, prostitution, strippers with no hope and saggy breasts, you get the idea. The location where the movie is shot really shines and if you're a fan of exploitation films you'll have a fun time reading some of the marquee signs. For fans of the red stuff there is plenty of it here including a few slow motion execution shots.
DVD Transfer: The transfer isn't going to blow you away or anything but this is probably the best this film has ever looked. Shriek Show and Code Red did a great job cleaning the print up.
DVD Audio: 2.1 track. Nothing too spectacular.
Extras: Not a whole lot here two "okay" featurettes and a really awesome selection of trailers, I counted about 23 total. The packaging is simple, no booklet or anything, but the cover art is great.
Overall the film just sort of falls flat. The sleazy scenery, blood, and squibs couldn't save it. The disc does have some nice extras, I absolutely loved the selection of trailers included. Even with the inclusion of awesome trailers I don't imagine I'll be revisiting this DVD any time soon. View at your own risk!

The Grudge 3 (2009) Review

The Grudge 3 (2009)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was also one of the few who saw it already and to be honest, it was a big improvement over The Grudge 2. The acting's pretty decent and the story was a lot more coherent this time around. The deaths weren't all that special but they definitely stepped up in the violence department to say the least. The ghosts were more aggressive and the story gets pretty intense as we get closer to seeing if this is truly the end of Kayako and Toshio's killing spree, but when it's all said and done, I had very mixed feelings about the ending. It's an ending that can truly be interpreted in so many different ways. If this is in fact the final movie of the trilogy, then we're left with a lot to think about. Rather that's a good or a bad thing is up to you.
On the the whole, despite me seeing it early, I'm seriously buying it no matter what. It definitely wasn't a waste of my time, but it doesn't surpass the first one in any way.If you're a die hard fan like me, you'll enjoy what this film has to offer to some extent.

Unthinkable (2010) Review

Unthinkable (2010)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As stated by many reviewers, this movie is a 5 star "under the radar" supernnova! Samuel Jackson portrays a "non-existent" terrorist interrogator, who is brought out to save the country from a nuclear Muslim terrorist, Arthur Younger played beautifully by Michael Sheen. Younger is frighteningly convincing with a mysterious conviction, a personal and religious agenda involving at least 3 hidden nuclear bombs of mass destruction, hidden in unknown metropolitan America.
Jackson's character is magnificent, simply known as "H," the silver bullet weapon who is the only chance to extract key information and save millions from an impending holocaust. The movie races under a pressure cooker of time, obstacles of authority, and confusion on how far to go in this unbelievable quandry of intensity and horror. What does "H" need to do to uncover and neutralize this madman's design to kill millions of innocents? The military and intelligence teams are portrayed with sublime perfection, especially the supporting actress, Carrie Ann Moss. She is utterly convincing as an icon of righteousness in being Helen Brody, FBI supervisor. Helen is on a rollercoaster of confliction, bound by integrity, ethics, and procedure who undergoes a shattering metamorphasis as the plot unfolds into one of narrowing, "unthinkable" choices.
This movie is more than thought provoking...it erupts off the Richter scale with aftershocks of repercussion that stay with the viewer for days! Shameful, painful, but somehow justifiable degradation of civilized behaviors under the duress of mass annihilation. What exactly will we do to protect our own and how will we justify it after the fact? "All virtue is summed up in dealing justly." ~Aristotle~ The premise remains as to "What is justice in certain circumstances...or does it cease to exist?" How far can we go before we individually and collectively blur the lines of our ethics and morality and revert back to primitive survival instincts? Is survival a matter of virtue or justice? Are basic instincts wrong?
This movie is impossible to watch without churning up inevitable questions of what lies beneath our civilized behaviors. Physical and mental torture are dancing on the razor's edge, the director (Gregor Jordan) is masterful at capturing the hidden, delicate and sledge hammer effects of this incredible and poignant battle. A masterpiece that will haunt our thoughts into analyzing each and every facet in this prescient film. Absolutely unthinkable to miss this one...

The most suspenseful thriller of the year explores just how far we will go to protect ourselves and our country. When a nuclear expert-turned-extremist (Michael Sheen, Underworld) plants devices in three separate cities, the country's counter-terrorism force springs into action and captures him. But the location of his bombs remains a mystery. With time running out, FBI agent Helen Brody (Carrie-Anne Moss, Disturbia) agrees to work alongside a mysterious interrogator known only as "H" (Samuel L. Jackson, Lakeview Terrace), whose ruthless methods get results. But a power struggle develops between Brody, "H', and the terrorist, and what happens next is unbelievable and -ultimately-Unthinkable!

NASCAR - The IMAX Experience (2004) Review

NASCAR - The IMAX Experience (2004)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I come from the heart of NASCAR country, and I have a lot of race memories going back a good quarter of a century now. I love racing, but I really haven't been able to watch it since that black day when Dale Earnhardt lost his life at Daytona; I doubt I'll ever be able to watch another Daytona 500 as long as I live. Still, I'd love to get past the loss of the Man in Black and make NASCAR a part of my Sunday rituals once again. That's the main reason I decided to watch NASCAR: The IMAX Experience. Of course, I have only seen it in the privacy of my own home, so I can't speak to the actual IMAX theatre experience. It's a good show, but I guess I was just expecting a little bit more out of it.
The main limitation of the film is its length; you can only say so much about the rich history of NASCAR in forty-eight minutes. There's a decent look at the origins of the sport, but most of the historical attention is placed on a select few superstars of years past. The behind-the-scenes look at the way cars are built and maintained is excellent, but many of the really technical aspects of car design are not covered - you'll get a quick picture of the way drafting works, but pushing and pulling, for example, aren't covered at all. You do get a good sense of the time and expense that goes in to making each and every race happen, though. Pit crews and spotters are given their due, and rightly so, and you also get a small taste of tail-gating and driver interaction with the public. That interaction goes a long way toward making NASCAR the fan success it is. You also get to hear from a few wives who bear the tough burden of being married to a driver, and this discussion easily spills over into a discussion of safety. Several drivers also make comments throughout the film, but all too often, the actual driver is not identified - if you can't recognize the voice, you won't know who is speaking on several occasions. I thought the selection of driver comments was also too limited, as some big names are left out entirely. The big thrills supposedly come from the IMAX footage of on-the-track action, but there's nothing all that special about the footage outside of an IMAX theatre setting. Frankly, I don't think the non-3D experience matches the footage you can see on your own television set come the next race Sunday.
If you're an established NASCAR fan, you may not get all that much out of NASCAR: The IMAX Experience, although you will surely find it enjoyable. Those new to the sport, however, can get a good sense of the excitement and enthusiasm the sport generates among its fans. You won't feel the thunder of the engines in your gut, though. Nothing, not even NASCAR: The IMAX Experience, compares to the excitement generated on any given race day.

Thriller: The Complete Series (1962) Review

Thriller: The Complete Series (1962)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am THRILLED that THRILLER is being released on August 31, 2010 this summer! Image Entertainment has put the entire series, which is two seasons, on 14 discs in this dvd set. All 67 one hour long chilling and some really frightening episodes will be seen in the original fantastic black and white film in all it's scary shadows and creepiness.
Thriller was originally shown on Tuesday nights in it's first 1960-1961 season on NBC from 9:00 to 10:00 p.m.. Because of parents complaints that the show was too scary for school age children, making them unable to sleep on a school night, NBC moved the show in it's second 1961 to 1962 season to Monday nights at a later time from 10:00 to 11:00 p.m.. The show began with it's host, the great Boris Karloff preparing it's audience for the great horrors and terrors that you were about to see and hear. Boris Karloff not only hosted the one hour long show, but starred in several episodes as well, adding his wonderfully brilliant performances to these extremely well written horror stories. The black and white film is perfect for the super eerie atmosphere of the scary stories and it really does add to the visual terror.
Stephen King calls Thriller the best horror series ever put on television. I call Thriller the only television series that gave me horrendous and terrifying, unable to sleep, nightmares as a child and I don't mean a few of the shows, but most of them! Most of the episodes feature the most disturbing stories of the macabre, twisted murders, terror and a few crime based episodes. The crime based episodes, though very excellent, full of twists and suspense, are not my favorites, as they are not as scary as the supernatural and macabre ones.
Image Entertainment said they have digitally restored the original black and white film and used Dolby digital sound on the recording. I remember getting goose bumps hearing the creepiest sounds and screams in some of the episodes, as if the film wasn't creepy enough with things hiding in every shadow and close ups of glaring dead eyes! In it's first season, Thriller was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Achievement In The Field Of Music For Television. It wasn't just the sounds and screams that were terrifying, but also the music! The next season, American Cinema Editors nominated Thriller for Best Edited Television Program, for the episode, A Third For Pinochle.
Thriller featured many well known actors and actresses in their episodes, some being: Boris Karloff, Leslie Nielson, silent film star Mary Astor, Rip Torn, Richard Chamberlain, Cloris Leachman, Ellen Corby, Victor Buono, Mary Tyler Moore, Jack Carson, Warren Oates, Werner Klemperer, Mort Saul, William Shatner, Donna Douglas, Susan Oliver, Ronald Howard, Robert Vaughn, Marlo Thomas, Jeanette Nolan, Tommy Nolan, Edward Andrews, Marion Ross, Brandon DeWilde, Natalie Schafer, Alejandro Rey, John Carradine, Tom Posten, Elizabeth Montgomery, Estelle Winwood, JoAnn Fleet, Bruce Dern, Richard Long, Ursula Andress, Denver Pyle, Sue Ann Langdon, Dick York, Reta Shaw, William Windom and George Kennedy.
I have to give a HUGE THANK YOU TO IMAGE ENTERTAINMENT for putting the time and effort into digitally restoring and releasing the greatest horror television series of all time! They are also including bonus materials of Audio Commentaries, Episodes Promos, Series Promos and Still Galleries. I am so looking forward to getting goose bumps and being terrified all over again with those dreaded nightmares that kept me and all my school friends awake all night and hiding deep under our covers, so afraid of the dark! This being my second time around to see these terrifying Thrillers, I have learned to never watch the supernatural or macabre episodes alone. If I have no choice and have to watch them alone, I will make sure to keep a light on, and most importantly, I'll make sure that there are no reflecting windows, glass or mirrors visible when watching THE HUNGRY GLASS! Even after 50 years, I can still remember the terrified photographer and his wife when they decided to ignore everyone telling them not to move into the haunted seaside house, but moved in anyway to live with the terrors reflected within!

Apartment Zero Review

What makes this film so good is how dangerous it is. It teeters on the edge of homosexuality and true friendship and at the same time casts Colin Firth as almost a damsel on the edge of madness to Hart Bochners rogue character. This movie is set in Buenos Aires and and creates a political climate, a delicate madness and an under current of so many divergent sexualities that fuel the film and keep pulling the rope taunter and taunter.
What makes this film so good is how eventually Firth's character expresses his love for a man who is a ne'erdowell and always will be. He goes to the brink of madness and violence but never of sexuality which is what twists this fikm in upon itself. Eventually it seems as if the relationship between the two becomes too fraught with peril for sex but all of there actions for each other are sexualized.
What I find interesting about this movie is that it in no way compromises its sexuality to be politically correct and instead challenges the watcher to stick with it thru a byzantine plot of identity that switches the nerd for the rogue and then the rogue for the nerd. Both men ultimately have no identity. firth's character by harsh abuse racked upon him by his family and currently dementia trapped mother and Bochner thru the way he must live for his terrorist lifestyle.
In the end Firth learns to absorb Bochner's character to have an identity and Bochner hesitates and theefore loses his own. The best movies are about things that are intangibly exchanged thru the physical world of actions representing so much more.

Chris Pine has really become quite the actor. I saw him first as Captain Kirk in Star Trek, and since then, I have gone back to watch a couple of his earlier movies along with the lower-budget Sci-Fi flick, "Carriers." In "Unstoppable," he really turns on the heat, and side-by-side with good ol' Denzel, he shines.
Here was a movie that, while viewing the trailers, I was thinking, "Really? An entire movie about a runaway train?" Well, the resounding answer is, "YES!" An excellent back-story, along with a perfect amount of character-building to get us to really like these people, made for a foundation on which to build one heck of an over-the-top mountain of suspense! In addition to Chris, Denzel Washington was excellent, as always, and the rest of the acting crew, especially Rosario Dawson, were perfectly cast and on top of their game as well. The main character was more than just a menace, though, it was downright deadly...THE TRAIN!
A review I read on another site said that this movie started slow, but by the time Chris and Denzel's characters got in on the action it was non-stop fun. Well, I'm here to tell you that this movie gets rolling within the first five minutes...literally...rolling. The action and suspense builds by leaps and bounds, second-by-second. On more than one occasion, "Unstoppable" gets you to hold your breath in anticipation of the next scene, or simply steals it altogether. This one comes highly recommended.
This is now one of Tony Scott's masterpieces. Great work to all! Five stars! *****
