I don't understand why these videos disappear from the stores, surely they will sell.It is so hard finding good, clean videos anymore and this being such a classic from the muppets who are still very popular. The Hello Kitty Diamond DVD Collection (2000) Review

The Hello Kitty Diamond DVD Collection (2000)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love this Hello Kitty gift set! The cartoons are from the 1980's Hello Kitty tv series "Hello Kitty's Furry Tale Theater," which are variations on popular fairy tales/movies. They feature Hello Kitty, My Melody, Tuxedo Sam, Chip, Catnip & Grinder, who are actors in the theatre.
Each DVD contains 5 fairy tales, and each fairy tale is about 10 minutes long and has its own unique take on the familiar stories. They are also changed to be less violent, nicer and more suited for children (water balloon fights instead of guns). This gift set contains all the episodes from the Furry Tale Theater series (that I know exist), except for "How ScrinChip Stole Christmas." (I am a little sad they left one out of the set!)
The quality of the DVD's are more like TV broadcast quality and this is the reason I've given it 4 stars instead of 5. I think they could've enhanced the quality before putting it onto DVD. I already owned the 2 Furry Tale Theater VHS's (Kitty and the Beast, The Wizard of Paws), so I already knew what to expect.
Each of the individual DVD's contained episodes I had not seen on the videos, so, I decided to get this gift set which has 2 extra DVD's not available for sale individually. I am not disappointed! I'm an adult Sanrio collector and I loved seeing these episodes, and I would feel good about letting my children see these too.
The following is the list of the episodes in each DVD:
"Hello Kitty Becomes a Princess" has Kitty and the Beast, Snow White Kitty and the One Dwarf, Sleeping Kitty, CinderKitty, and KittyLocks and the Three Bears.
"Hello Kitty Saves the Day" contains Grinder Genie and the Magic Lamp, Peter Penguin, Tar-Sam of the Jungle, Paws of the Round Table, and Crocodile Penguin.
"Hello Kitty Goes to the Movies" has The Wizard of Paws, K.T. the Kitty Terrestial, Kitty and the Kong, Cat Wars, and Paws- the Great White Dog-Shark.
The following two are the extra DVD's that come in this set:
"Hello Kitty Plays Pretend" contains The Phantom of the Theater, Frankencat, Catula, The Pawed Piper, and Rumpeldogskin.
"Hello Kitty Tells Fairy Tales" has Robin Penguin, Hello Mother Goose, The Ugly Quackling, Pinocchio Penguin, and Little Red Bunny Hood.

As seen on public television Pecos Bill Cleans Up The West collects three episodes from the educational, Emmy award-winning children's series "Between the Lions": "Pecos Bill Cleans Up the West", in which a storybook tornado makes a terrible mess in the library, "Lionel's Great Escape Trick" in which Lionel ties himself up with ropes and tries to escape without using magic words, and "Touching the Moon", in which Leona won't let her family sleep because she wishes for a queen to touch the moon. Catchy songs, adorable feline puppets, and a magical world in which letters sing, words come alive, and characters pop off the pages abound in this delightful DVD that combines entertainment and a curriculum of key reading skills. Special DVD features include downloadable activities and reader tips, a "Leading the way to Literacy" bonus video, a downloadable activity guide in English and Spanish, and much more. A highly recommended addition to DVD libraries for beginning readers. 90 minutes, color.

The King of Masks (1999) Review

The King of Masks (1999)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a wonderfully intelligent and heart-warming work. I thoroughly thoroughly recommend it. Set in a beautifully-evoked Sichuan province (watch for guest appearances by the Giant Buddha of Emei Shan) in China during the 1930s, Wu Tianming's beautifully delineated movie tells the story of Wang Bianlian, played by the veteran Xu Zhu, an aging street performer who buys a young boy, Gou-er (translated as "Doggie" in the subtitles). Gou-er (luminously portrayed by an absolutely fabulous Zhou Renying) is to be Old Wang's heir as the old man seeks to pass on his family secrets as a master of "changing face" theater.
This situation needs a little explaining for modern western audiences. Many times in Chinese history there were awful famines or economic depressions where families faced starvation and destitution. This was particularly true in the late Republican period when civil war added yet another level of problems for ordinary Chinese people. In these circumstances, desperate families sometimes resorted to selling some or all of their children to wealthy families. Often these children would be brought up as virtual slaves, especially if they were girls.
Gou-er is a pet name. Chinese children were often given these names instead of real ones until they were old enough to be fairly assured of living to be adults. This practice stemmed from the folk belief that the lurking demons that populated the Chinese landscape (particularly in natural areas such as rivers, woods and mountains) would be fooled into thinking that the child was worthless if their family referred to them as "Stinky" or "Idiot" –or "Little Dog", and so would not attempt to steal the child or kill it.
Old Wang needs a boy because according to Confucian tradition, he cannot pass the knowledge on to a girl since daughters or grand daughters were not considered to be permanent members of one's family in traditional Chinese society. Women were brought up to be married out to other families. The men were the ones who stayed within the family and maintained the family resources. Usually this meant land for peasants, but for the rich it meant wealth and for performers like Old Wang, it meant the secrets of the trade. For this reason, I must take issue with Laura Mirsky's editorial review which infers that the famous cross-dressing opera star Luo Sulan (ably played by Zhang Zhigang) was unsuitable as an heir because he portrayed women on stage.
While it is true that Chinese society is conventionally very homophobic, and Luo Sulan is certainly portrayed as a rather effeminate young man, the larger obstacle (and this is important since it is another example of Confucian tradition at work) was that Luo was not a member of Old Wang's family. "Changing face" was a family tradition and could not be handed on to anyone who was an outsider. Luo's status as a man who plays women on stage would not have been an issue in and of itself since this was the norm in Chinese opera of the time. As in Shakespearean England, women were not allowed to perform as actors so all the female roles were played by men (see also the wonderful Chen Kaige movie "Farewell My Concubine").
This movie deals with issues of family, loyalty, love and tradition. It is an overt critique of traditional Chinese society but is also a pointed (though gentle) indictment of the resurgence of some of these Confucian values in modern China following the economic boom of the eighties and nineties...

Railway Children: Masterpiece Theatre (2000) Review

Railway Children: Masterpiece Theatre (2000)

This PBS version of "The Railway Children" is nowhere near as
charming as the original 1970 movie. If you saw this TV version and liked it, you owe it to yourself to see the young Jenny Agutter in the earlier film. In my opinion, the PBS remake lacks the warmth and civility of the original.

Faerie Tale Theatre: Tales from the Brothers Grimm (1982) Review

Faerie Tale Theatre: Tales from the Brothers Grimm (1982)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Though Shelley Duvall's Faerie Tale Theatre is available as a complete collection, the thematic DVD sets are also well-done. This particular DVD contains 4 adapted Brothers' Grimm tales:
- Hansel and Gretel which features Ricky Schroeder as Hansel, Bridgette Andersen as Gretel, and Joan Collins as both the wicked stepmother and witch.
- Rapunzel which features Gena Rowlands as the witch, Shelley Duvall as both Rapunzel and Rapunzel's mom, and Jeff Bridges as the prince and er, Rapunzel's dad.
- Rumpelstiltskin features Shelley Duvall as the girl/Queen, and Herve Villachaize "the plane, the plane" as Rumpelstiltskin, and
- Little Red Riding Hood which features Mary Steenburgen as LRRH, and Malcolm McDowell as the wolf.
The stories have a touch of humor in them and are well-acted by a talented ensemble cast. Highly recommended for the young and young at heart!

Scooby-Doo The Mystery Begins (2009) Review

Scooby-Doo The Mystery Begins (2009)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First, I want everyone to know that I love the first two Scooby-Doo live action films. I thought the casting was done well, the stories were fine, and they looked good. I thought the second one was a little cooler because it had a lot of the "monsters" from the original Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? series coming to life.
With that being said, I was a little concerned with this third entry in the series. Usually a movie with this many red flags spells absolute disaster and almost guarantees a turd of a film. Let's spell out the red flags: its direct-to-DVD, it's a prequel, it's totally recast, and it's got a new director. Wow. That's a lot to have going against a movie. Interestingly enough, it didn't prove to be true for this flick.
Scooby-Doo: The Mystery Begins somehow rises up above the crowded direct-to-DVD sequel / prequel cesspool and actually is successful at being entertaining and not completely cheap-looking. You can tell that director Brian Levant really wanted to escape the stereotype that these types of movies get and show that he was serious about the subject matter and franchise. Warner definitely played it smart with Levant, being that he is responsible for bringing to the big screen some very successful family movies and iconic animated TV shows like Beethoven, The Flintstones feature films, Jingle All The Way, and Are We There Yet?
The casting was done pretty well. All the actors fit the parts, although not without a few minor problems. Robbie Arnell would have completely been convincing in the part of Fred, except that for some reason he wasn't made to bleach his hair blond for the film. What was the reasoning behind that? I mean, he did take the part of an iconic blond character. The least he could have done is bleach his hair out to put the finishing touches on the role. My only other problem was with Nick Palatas' performance as Shaggy. He was really good and definitely looked the part. It just seemed like he was going a little overboard with the cracking squeaky voice sometimes. It seemed a little forced at times. I thought it was cool that they kept Frank Welker as the voice of Scooby-Doo, as he has been doing the character for the past seven years in different series and movies.
Even the special effects were done well. The ghosts all looked just as good as any of the ones in the two movies they released in the theaters. I have to say, though, that there were scenes of the Scooby gang that were missing Scooby-Doo that felt kind of awkward. It almost seemed like they cut him out of the scenes to save money on their CGI budget. There were some parts with Scooby that looked a little less than stellar and where it looked like the actor in the shot with him was having trouble interacting with an invisible dog. They were all minor problems, though. It shouldn't take away from your viewing pleasure.
Overall, I have to say that I was pretty impressed with this movie. It was kind of fun to see the gang paint The Mystery Machine, meet each other, and solve their first crime together. If you're a Scooby-Doo fan, I'm pretty sure this movie will live up to your standards.

Tall Tales & Legends: The Complete Series (1985) Review

Tall Tales and Legends: The Complete Series (1985)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For fans of Shelley Duvall's Faerie Tale Theater, Tall Tales and Legends represents another fantastic collection of star-studded stories. In this, her second anthology collection, Ms. Duvall focused on American Folklore stories rather than the more internationally known fairy tales of the more well known collection "Faerie Tale Theatre". Stories like Johnny Appleseed, Casey at the Bat, Darlin' Clementine all come alive in Tall Tales, and while the sets may be a little more sparce than in Faerie Tale Theatre, the stories and productions are once again fantastic, and the casts are once again superb. In our family, Martin Short as Johnny Appleseed is the clear cut winner among the younger sect (ages 7 and 9).
The original release of this was quite expensive and included 9 individual dvd's in individual cases. This new version is a welcomed re-build of the series onto 3 discs, compiling the stories into a smaller overall package with a very attractive price point and a smaller foot-print on the proverbial kid's shelf. Kudos to E1 for the re-formatting.

I have this on video and I really enjoy watching it. I think the Flintstone's version of Dicken's classic is really interesting. The "Bedrock Bug" concept is funny too. This is highly recommended. Oh, I also liked the line by Philo, the cop: "You'd better get the stars out of your eyes and watch where you're going."

Pollyanna (2004) Review

Pollyanna (2004)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Georgina Terry plays Pollyanna with a sweet faced, ever-happy style that suits the plot. It's pretty faithful to the original plot of the missionary's daughter, orphaned and coming to live with a strict aunt. As Pollyanna plays her "Glad Game" and teaches it to the problem characters, the villagers' lives are transformed. Everyone from the reclusive misanthrope to the chronically ill to the town doctor find new ways of looking at life from interacting with the little girl.
The very name Pollyanna is now synonymous for unreasoning optimism due to this book. I loved this story when I read it as a child and am glad they treated it well in this remake.
The costumes and setting fit very well (although the original book was not English) and have the usual high quality of a Masterpiece Theater production.
I had to knock off a star because sometimes the actors spoke too fast or breathlessly so some of the dialogue is lost.

It's a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie (2002) Review

It's a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie (2002)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I did my footwork before purchasing this disc, so I wasn't expecting a classic - I was merely expecting the Muppets to show up.
And show up they did. It's a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie is a decidedly mixed bag which will entertain longtime Muppet fans and impressionable rugrats, but anyone else is going to be mildly amused at best and flat-out bored at worst.
Listed as a 2002 production, the film showcases what's left of the faded energy of the old school Muppets ensemble: Steve Whitmire (as a sharp Kermit), and to a lesser extent, Dave Goelz (as Gonzo in more of a supporting role). The "newcomers" provide life to the cast, but also reveal the that these are not the Muppets of our youth - while Eric Jacobsen does a fantastic job filling in for Frank Oz's roles (Piggy, Fozzy, Sam, Animal, even a cameo by Yoda) and Bill Barreta's Pepe is as sly and funny as ever, other classic characters such as Scooter, Janice, and Rowlf are noticeably different, or even silent altogether. While the differences in the older Muppets are a result of the puppets suffering the death or retirement of their main puppeteers, some of the newer characters are as cringe-inducing as ever. Johnny Fiama, I'm lookin' at you.
The spotty lameness extends to the human roles, though not in places you might expect. David Arquette is surprisingly not completely irritating in his role, and Joanne Cusak is appropriately nasty as the villain. But Whoopi Goldberg makes an uniteresting God (who does make an interesting God?) and Matthew Lillard's turn as a French director, is, well, um, he tried. Yes, he tried.
The film itself (or, the TV Movie itself) is not bad, providing decent pacing, excellent production values, breezy, smart writing, and even some treats for Muppet fans. There are several sweet in-jokes, such as when God rewinds to the beginning of Kermit's story, she stops at the tail end of an interview with -ugh- Carson Daly, and Kermit says "...and that's why I wear this funny green collar!" Kudos for the subtlety of Scooter's lame boast at the theater Christmas party, "My uncle used to own this theater, you know!"
Additionally, a few surprises await, and the only one I'll give away is that Fozzie has an action sequence. Yes, an action sequence. It, like so much else in the film, is decent while hovering perilously close to being bad. But, to its credit, it's something new, and nothing is more new than seeing the hard-luck Muppets of a "Kermit-less" universe, a twisted world where Piggy is a Miss Cleo-like psychic living in a small apartment with twenty cats.
Of final note are the sheer amount of Muppet cameos in the film. Sweetums, Lew Zealand, Crazy Harry and even Beauregard - BEAUREGARD - make appearences, sometimes even with lines. It was a trip to see characters long since retired shake the dust off at least one last time.
All in all, this is worth seeing for the casual Muppet fan, but perhaps only worth owning for those still entranced by talking pieces of felt with googly eyes. For this franchise to survive, they're going to have to take more risks, and It's A Very Merry Muppet Christmas is a good first step.
